Called To Serve

Mark 10:45

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Life ChangeToday’s thought is a quick reminder for all of us who feel a calling to lead. If we are called to lead – we are called to serve. Leaders in the church – be it pastors – Bible study leaders – Sunday School teachers – church officers – office staff – church staff – and more – are called to be servant ministers rather than dictators. Can I get an amen?

If we are followers of Christ – it should be more about whom we serve than the positions we hold. Some people work hard for title or position – rather than to serve. Some people can’t wait to be called teacher – pastor – reverend – church leader – when it shouldn’t matter what we are called – we should all be serving Jesus and serving others. Let’s keep that in mind sisters and brothers. We’re called to serve! If we are called to lead – we are called to serve.

Here’s today’s passage in partial context. James and John were discussing their place in Jesus’ kingdom – their place in the pecking order so to speak and Jesus set them straight. Mark 10:35–45 – 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. 37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” 38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” 39 “We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.” 41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Here’s another word about our call to serve. Ephesians 2:10 – For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. We are God’s handiwork – we are created to do His bidding – to serve Him and His people. The question should not be – what is our title – but rather – what is our task and who will we serve.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.

  1. Good one, Ray. I retired two years ago and with each passing day, I realize how much more this is true. Through baptism, we are all graciously called to follow Christ. Some will lead, some will follow, but we’re all servants–and friends–of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Whatever role we assume, as lay or clergy, we are all equal at the foot of the cross. I look forward to that Day when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord!
