We’re Not Working Alone!

John 14:15-17

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Life ChangeI’ve always liked to work with someone rather than alone. I could work all day if my dad was helping (or rather I was helping my dad) – yet if I was working alone – it was hard to stay on task. Even when dad gave me clear instructions – it was hard to stay on task with no one to help me.

I’m the same way today – work better with someone helping me. I would even invite my brother over to watch me work so I had someone present.

My wife and I cleaned the garage and painted a wall in the garage Monday. We cleaned up a couple of tool boxes and moved two to the basement. We threw a bunch of stuff out and straightened things up. My wife even claimed part of the basement as hers and wouldn’t let me store any of my stuff there – nothing goes near my motorcycle – she said. It was hard work – but it was fun work – working with her all morning before we went over to a daughter’s home for family time.

Even today – I like to work with others rather than by myself. If I work by myself – I like to have music playing. Maybe this is part of my ADHD – I’m not sure. Maybe it is part of my Tourette Syndrome. Maybe some doctor will diagnose me some day. I’m weird and I know it.

Today’s passage is from some of the last instructions Jesus gave His disciples – His followers – before His departure. He told them to obey His commands. Remember those? When asked what the greatest commandment was – Jesus responded – Matthew 22:37–40 – 37 Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

Here’s today’s passage again – John 14:15-17 – 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

So – loving God more than anything and loving others sums up the commandments of God. Jesus made a promise though – if we follow His commandments – He will send to us a helper. I like that – I like that I don’t have to work alone. Jesus promises us the Holy Spirit – our advocate and helper. The world knows nothing of the Holy Spirit – but we will know the Holy Spirit – because the Holy Spirit will dwell in us and work through us and at times in spite of us!

Jesus promises us help and His presence through the Holy Spirit. I work better and I think many work better with someone with us. Thank You – Lord – for the promise of Your presence.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.

P.S. Please pray for the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church starting today and running through Saturday as we will meet for Annual Conference in Baltimore.
