Let Jesus Shine In Us – Thru Us – and In Spite of Us

Matthew 5:14

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

June 2019The month of October is the beginning of darker days. Only a few months away from the heat and long days of July we are currently experiencing. Darkness is fun at times – and at times it is not. I remember growing up and living next door to a cemetery. Now that could be scary – at least for those not use to it. When friends came over or cousins visited – we would play hide and seek. I would always hide in the cemetery – over in the darkest corners where the house light didn’t shine. Whenever someone got close to where I was hiding – I would make sounds that would scare them away. The darkness and the unknown would always win the day. But darkness is not always something to be desired as we will see.

Darkness – in today’s scripture – represents the absence of Jesus. Jesus is instructing His followers and He tells them that they are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. As believers – as disciples of Jesus – we are to allow His light to shine in us – thru us – and in spite of us.

I remember – again as a child – traveling to my mother’s home town – Moorefield WV.  As we would come over the mountains – with very little light other than our headlights – we would crest the last mountain top and move down toward the valley. As we descended the mountain – we would see the lights of Moorefield. We knew we were there – for mom – it was her childhood home. I remember when the chicken plant started running all night and when they got their first fast food store – a McDonald’s. As the town started to get more and more active over the years – the lights were stronger as we crested that last mountain.

I’ve watched over the years as youth came to churches I’ve served. I watched as many of them came to know Jesus. Slowly – but often most assuredly – the light of this new Christian in the home would begin to shine light in the darkness and the family would be drawn to the light. I’ve seen it work in the workplace when a Christian begins to work in a workplace without the light of Jesus. I’ve seen it happen in a number of settings. When we allow the light of Christ to shine in our lives – those in the darkness are drawn to what we have – the light of Christ. This is what I meant Tuesday night at Bible Study – when I encouraged the members of the study to let Jesus be seen in them – at work – at home – everywhere they go.

Unfortunately – even in some churches – people who claim to know Jesus do not shine for Him. Too often – some folks try to ride the fence and try to keep their faith in Christ a secret – at home – in the community – at work – even in the church. If Christ is truly in us – we WILL shine dear readers. I hate to be blunt – but I would seriously doubt the faith of a person who wanted to hide their light under a bushel! Mathew 5:14-16 – 14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

We’re told that if Christ is in us – we will be different. 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

We’re also told that if we stand up for Jesus – He will stand up for us.  We’re also told that if we deny Him before men and women He will deny us before the Father.  Matthew 10:32-33 – 32 Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

So believers – you are the light of the world – if Christ is indeed within you! If Christ is in you – in me – we MUST let His light shine in EVERYTHING we do – not just on Sunday mornings. I try to play basketball with some younger men early in the morning once in awhile. We always pray for our witness – our attitudes – our tempers – to be in check. We have people coming and going as we play at a nearby church facility. Even while we play basketball – we are a light for Christ. Wherever your day takes you today – takes us today – remember to let Jesus shine in you – thru you – and even in spite of you into the darkened world!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
