Our Heart Is Revealed By Our Lives

1 John 3:10

This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

June 2019There are times when the Bible seems so clear – so simple. At times the words are so very clear and at times there is room for interpretation.

Have you ever bitten into an apple that seemed so shiny and ripe on the outside – only to find a worm on the inside or a soft spot that was beginning to rot? Things are not always as they appear on the outside.

Jesus talks about the religious leaders of his day – and says the following about them;

Matthew 23:25-28 – 25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. 27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

It didn’t take me long in ministry to find out that not all religious people – pastors and lay persons – are as they appear on the outside. I have run into a number of people in my years of ministry that seemed to have it all going – on the outside – but on the inside – they had critical spirits – terrible attitudes – or other major flaws. At times – the truth came out in an explosion – as they were trying so hard to hide the inner-self – trying to present the good exterior. I remember – on a number of occasions – hearing the true heart of a person come out as they ripped someone with their tongue – verbally or in writing. They had tried so hard to present themselves as a shiny ripe apple – only to expose the rotten part of their heart in a flurry of anger.

None of us are perfect – but Jesus seemed to be saying what I’ve said for so long.  If the heart – the attitude – is right – the actions will follow.  If the heart is not right – the actions can only be faked for so long – and we can never fake out God. If we wish to follow Christ – and be a good witness – we must work on our heart first. The inside needs to be cleansed by the blood of the lamb. Without a good inside – the outside can be just for show – and not for real.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
