God Is Watching Over Us

Psalm 121:3

He will not let your foot slip — he who watches over you will not slumber;

photo on 6-11-19 at 10.52 amJust to bring you up to date – I have five granddaughters. Two are in 1st grade – two are in pre-school and one is catching her older sisters and cousins (she wants to do everything the older girls do)!

Believe it or not – I actually get left alone with them from time to time. I have sat with the three from the one family for movie night while their parents go out for an evening (their parents must have been desperate for a night out to leave them under my care – LOL!). Before we go any further I want you to know everything went well and there were no fires! The girls actually go to bed for me pretty well – better than my own girls if I remember correctly.

Technology is so great these days – when I watched my granddaughters solo – her parents had cameras in each bedroom that allowed me to watch them in their rooms. I can even talk to them – when they get out of bed. I could watch them (and their parents could too while they were out) without disturbing them. It is better than peeking into their rooms every 45 seconds. I wish we had those when our children were babies.

Parenting little ones can have its trying times too (can I get an Amen!). As we try to watch out for them and take care of them – we often lose sleep or even some peace of mind (Facebook friends just had a baby recently and they are reporting that sleep time has left them already). The Psalmist wrote that he who watches over you will not slumber. God is watching us all the time – nothing happens in our lives that God is not aware of and in ultimate control over  since God is Sovereign! That clearly doesn’t mean God causes everything to happen – read the story of Job – but it does mean that nothing happens that God is not aware of and ready to handle! God has promised to never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). He is always there – never asleep at the wheel!

It is comforting to know that he who watches over you will not slumber. It made me feel good to know my father was always there when I was younger and now it is good to know that my heavenly Father has been and always will be there watching over me! Peace of mind is a good thing. Knowing that God is on duty brings me peace of mind. Knowing that our (heavenly) Father is watching over us brings that peace of mind!

This brings me peace as we face uncertain times. The General Conference in 2020 for the United Methodist Church has made some people uneasy. I must confess – I am not at all comfortable with what may or may not happen. But – my God – our God – will not be caught off guard with what happens and already has a plan – if we will follow it – to draw us deeper into His presence. The 2020 Presidential elections are uneasy for some as well – and yet – God already knows who will win each election and has a plan – if we will just follow it.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
