The Holy Spirit – Come Spirit – Come

Luke 1:35

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

Life ChangeThe overshadowing of the Holy Spirit made me think of a school experience. I remembered when I was in elementary school – we use to pass notes in class (I don’t recommend this to our students). You know the type note I’m talking about – the girls would make up these little books with questions in them like do you like so-in-so? One of the questions on a booklet passed around said – do you like Dark Shadows? Now Dark Shadows was a show that came on right after school – a soap opera as it were. It was about a vampire and creepy things. I didn’t watch it – or at least hadn’t watched it before being asked – and didn’t even know about it – and so I thought they were talking about dark shadows at night. Everyone else was saying yes – so of course – succumbing to peer pressure – I said yes as well. It was only later – when I was asked specific questions about Dark Shadows – I found out it was a TV show – and of course I started watching it.

That memory came back to me as I read today’s passage. Of course today’s passage is about Mary – the mother of Jesus – but it talked about the Most High overshadowing Mary – and so I thought of that school experience. Of course – one was an evil overshadowing and this passage is telling Mary that the power of the Most High will overshadow her.

Have you ever felt like the Holy Spirit was upon you? I mean – have you ever felt that the Holy Spirit was so heavy upon you that you felt overshadowed – like the Spirit was all over you? It is an awesome feeling – a feeling I wish every Christian would experience. Being so overshadowed by the Holy Spirit that you felt soaked in the Spirit – drenched in His presence. Feeling that close or connected to the Holy Spirit is such a blessed feeling.

Yesterday we began a new sermon series on the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts. The Holy Spirit was very present and empowered Paul and Peter and others at the birth of the church in Acts.

The Holy Spirit will overshadow us – will cover us – will empower us. Like the Holy Spirit did in the Book of Acts – the Holy Spirit can do the same today. We’re told to seek after the Holy Spirit – to seek and yearn for His presence. I want to urge all believers to do just that – seek after the Holy Spirit. When we pray – when we read the Bible – when we worship – don’t be in such a hurry – don’t come with an agenda – allow time for the Holy Spirit to speak to our spirit. Be still and listen! God is not hiding from us. God wants to be present with us. The Holy Spirit – God with us today – wants to overshadow us.

Psalm 27:14 – Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Let me know what happens? I would love to post some testimonies of what God did in us – through us – and in spite of us – when we waited and allowed the Holy Spirit to overshadow us! Lord – let the Holy Spirit overshadow us all!

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
