Make My Joy Complete

Philippians 2:2

then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.

img_0063-2I looked back at the months before the 2016 elections. I found something I wrote in March 2016. I will make some changes today – but the truths from 2016 are still truths today. Remember – both parties were trying to find a candidate in 2016.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

This will be a short devotional today – but it will have much to ponder. First – how’s your Prayer/Fast going (we were in Lent when I wrote this and we were doing a prayer fast)? I pray it is going well and that God is speaking to you.

Second – and lastly – the Presidential Elections of 2016 are not going well. I’m not talking about my candidate doing well or not. I’m talking about the way ALL of the candidates are acting – both parties. Childish would not be strong enough. Making fun of one another – the way they talk – their physical appearance – their gender – and more is not what we the voters want to see – IMHO. I know I would much rather hear a debate on the issues of the day – like the economy – national security – immigration – the Supreme Court – race relations – entitlement programs – the environment – and more.  I’d much rather hear their agenda moving forward than to listen to them cutting down their counterparts.

Here is today’s passage in partial context. Philippians 2:1–4 – 1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Most of the candidates claim to be Christian – yet – IMHO – they are not acting in a Christ like manner! Enough said…  Your thoughts are welcome!

We haven’t grown up much since 2016. What has been made clear – this isn’t your momma’s political scene. Along with the candidates not acting Presidential – whatever that looks like – the media today is so partisan. The major media papers and news agencies – online and TV – are so slanted (most to the left and democratic by the way).

Gone – it seems – are the days when policy is debated – rather it is smear campaign after smear campaign. Commercials rarely tout policy but rather they demean their opponent. I may end up without a candidate for President in 2020 like I was in 2016. I think – this time – I will vote for someone – but maybe not either main party candidate.

As Christian Americans – we have to try and get beyond and above this political scene. We need to do this with our own issues in the UMC. We need to love one another – even when we disagree. We need to look beyond our political and theological differences and love on one another. This is what will make God’s joy complete.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
