Day 23 of Lent 2020

1 Corinthians 11:26

For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Ray 2020Today is Day 23 of the 40 Days of Lent reading plan. I pray that we have all kept up with the reading each day. If not – try to catch up! Yesterday was a catch up day. I appreciate this walk to the cross. It is not hard or long – and will give us a good insight into the walk that Jesus made for us.

It may be some time before we worship together. I’m thinking – whatever Sunday that will be – we will celebrate Holy Communion. As we remember the Last Supper that Jesus had with His disciples – we will remember our connection with Christ and with each other. It will be a special time before the Lord and we hope that all will attend that first Sunday back (whenever that will be). Plans are being made to make this a unique service. (By the way – we are also making plans to celebrate Easter on the second Sunday back.)

Today’s passage is about that last supper and reminds us to treat it with respect. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. I can’t wait until we can share it together. I hope it is sooner rather than later.

The entire reading for today is shorter than some of the others but is just as powerful. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 – 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”  25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”  26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

I think some of us might have taken gathering together every Sunday and sharing communion every month for granted. I know at times it might have become routine even. I pray – when this pandemic is over – we will never take meeting together for granted again.

God bless you as you walk with Jesus to the Cross of Calvary! Walk with me toward the cross. Deny yourself as I deny myself and let us draw near to Christ.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.

P.S. – Keep praying for our denomination. The General Conference of the United Methodist Church’s meeting in May has been postponed. No date for the conference has been set yet. The church is in need of prayer.

P.S.S. – We are currently closed at First Church. We will do a broadcast at 10 am on Sundays while we are closed (on Facebook Live). You do not need to have a Facebook account to join us on Facebook Live. Here Is the link for the service on Sundays – https://www.facebook.com/RevRayPage/.
