Hunger and Thirst

Matthew 5:6

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Rays HaircutI often talk – teach and preach about being ready for Christ’s return. One sermon I preached was titled That Day and Hour. In it we were that Christ will return for us. We also preached about being ready for His return. I mentioned that Christ would return in one of two ways for us – either He would be there for us when we drew our last breath or He would return to receive His church at the rapture. Are we ready?

We’ve mentioned a number of things we could do to be ready for Jesus’ return in previous teachings and sermons. Of course – number one on the list is receiving Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Without Jesus – we would be hopelessly lost for eternity.

We’ve named a few other things we could do as well. We don’t need to give a list of all of the things we could do to be prepared for Christ’s return – but – we’ve mentioned a few things. Among those things we listed was today’s passage.

We need to have a hunger and thirst after righteousness – a deep hunger and thirst for Jesus – and for right living. A deep and abiding faith does not come by chance or thru osmosis – because our parents were people of faith. It comes from walking with Jesus – daily – even moment by moment. Having a hunger and thirst after right living is so essential to being ready for Jesus’ return.

Here’s today’s passage in partial context. It comes from the section called – in most Bibles – the Beatitudes. Matthew 5:1–12 – 1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them. He said: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Other ways to be prepared that we’ve mentioned in the past are digging into the Word of God – spending more time in prayer – witnessing our faith to others – and more. But after receiving Christ as Lord and Savior – I would say to have hunger and thirst after right living – after Christ – is next in line. A desire to grow in Christ is essential.

Just something for us to think about today as we go on our way.
