Temptation – We Must Resist

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Life ChangeWhat is it that temps us? Not too long ago I wrote about How to Turn From Addictions. Today we want to write about temptations. Maybe our temptations haven’t gotten to the point where they are addictions – but – they still might be an area of concern for us.

What is it that temps us? Temptations can lead to sin – which can lead to a separation between God and us. Matthew 26:41 – Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. We strive to follow God’s commands – but the flesh is weak. We get tempted – and we yield to our weaknesses.

What is it that temps us? Temptations come from Satan – they do not come from God. Temptations can also drag us away from God. James 1:13–14 – 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. What Is It That Temps Us?

All Temptations Can Be Rebuked

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

What is it that tempts us? Is it something we eat? Is it something we wear? Is it something to take to the bank? Is it some feeling we receive from a sexual thought or behavior? Basically it is whatever fuels our desires and pleases our heart. The things that draw our heart tempt us. Satan is the great tempter and he is always working to steal our joy and our relationship with Jesus.

James – the brother of Jesus – wrote these words about temptation. James 1:13–18 – 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created. God’s Escape Route

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

IMG_0435-0This is an amazing passage. It is a promise that should bring us much peace and joy. At the same time it should hit us between the eyes as well. There is no excuse for sin. We are promised a way out – a way to deal with – every temptation that comes our way. That is Good News and also challenging news.

Here is a definition of temptation from Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th Edition) – 1: the act of tempting or the state of being tempted especially to evil: enticement – 2: something tempting: a cause or occasion of enticement.

I’ve often said you couldn’t tempt me with a plate of liver. I would need to be extremely hungry to eat liver. Now a bowl of ice cream is very tempting to me. What is it that tempts you? As those temptations arise – are we looking for God’s escape routes? Continue reading
