Love Deeply

1 Peter 4:8

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

The 1st year anniversary of my mother’s passing was just a couple of days ago. It was a sad day for me – I shed more than a few tears. Mom always showered her children with love. She loved her children deeply – but she loved her man – my father – even more so. She gave of herself in every way so that we would feel cared for and loved. At times I would even say she suffered for us.

In a few months I will remember my father’s passing 6 years ago. Dad loved mom and his children deeply. He worked several jobs – at a time – to provide for his family. He worked hard to show his deep love for his family. At times I would even say he suffered for us.

This summer my wife and I will celebrate 38 years of marriage – if she stays with me till August (LOL). We’re already talking about what we will do to celebrate our 40th. My wife loves her children and her husband deeply. We also love our grandchildren deeply. At times we suffer for them all. Continue reading

When We Serve – We Serve The Lord!

1 Peter 4:11

If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.

Photo on 6-21-16 at 2.53 PMIn church life – there is always a discussion about paid persons and volunteers. I heard an SPRC chair recently say we’re all servants of God – some of us just do more serving and so some get paid for it – but we all serve our Lord (or something like that).

I know some volunteers who do more than some paid staff – but putting that aside – the real issue is how we view our service. Is our service different if we are paid verses being a volunteer? Should we serve differently when we are volunteers – since we are not being paid?

In church life – this debate often rages. I hear comments like – I’m only a volunteer or I’m not getting paid. For some – not getting paid means they can do it or not do it – since they are only a volunteer. Continue reading

Are You Using Your Gifts?

1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:

profileSorry this was so late today.  I had it on the server but something happened and it didn’t go out.

OK – we’re a month past Christmas.  Don’t answer this e-mail out loud or even on this blog page – but are there gifts you received this year (or in years past) that you don’t use – have taken back – or have even hidden in the closet or downstairs?  Like a picture of dogs playing cards that someone gave you for over your mantel place?  Or that hideous lamp someone gave you that was taken back or hidden somewhere – to come out when they were coming over?

We tend to hide certain gifts it seems.  Most every family has experienced this – right?  Many times we exchange items we don’t like for items we do like.  That is partly why the day after Christmas is such a big shopping day – that and the sales that occur after Christmas.  If I could only convince my family that Christmas came a week later we could get some real deals – lol.
