What Is It That Hinders Our Faith Walk?

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Let’s think a little today about what hinders our daily walk with Jesus? What is it that keeps us from living as a Disciple in all areas of our life? What keeps us from being a complete disciple in Worship – in Fellowship – in Discipleship – in Ministry – and in Evangelism? What hinders us from bringing people into the presence of God – building people up in Christ – and sending people out to serve Christ?

My children – when they were younger – got into the Wii when it first came out and played target games. I tried to play the back in the day and did OK but I didn’t know where all the targets were – all the secret things to shoot at – so my score wasn’t that high. The kids knew where the items were that scored so they weren’t better shooters – but they knew what to shoot at! Continue reading

How To Turn From Addictions

James 4:7

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Some of us have addictive personalities or makeups. Our constitution is not strong enough – at times – to withstand the attraction of what we desire. We can be manipulated by things or persons to do things we wouldn’t ordinarily do if it weren’t for that which we become addicted.

For some of us it is hard to resist things we desire. For some – alcohol or drugs become substances that can control our lives. We try to fight the attraction – but often we are too weak to stand opposed to our desires. We try to dry out – we try rehab – we try going cold turkey – and for some it works – but for many of us – it doesn’t. Drugs and alcohol can control our lives and even take our life.

For some of us it is hard to resist things we desire. For some – food is an addiction. I know we must eat to survive – but for some of us – we eat beyond survival. For some – we are addicted to food. There is an old saying – eat to live – don’t live to eat. Over eating can not only control our lives – it can even take our life Continue reading

Alive To God In Christ Jesus

Romans 6:11

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

I had a young person in my office recently. This young person was having a battle with an addiction and was asking for my recommendation on how to overcome the addiction. When they were in the midst of their addictive behavior – they would feel the Holy Spirit pricking their heart – yet they enjoyed the addiction – so they often pushed the Spirit aside. It was a real struggle – a struggle many of us have battled before and will battle in the future.

I know a person who has battled addiction for many decades. They have suffered much. Their family has suffered much as well. They seemingly had defeated the addiction for a long period of time only to have it rear its ugly head again. Addiction is never gone – it is always one day at a time. Our victory is only a needle – a bottle – a porn site away. Addiction can at times make us seem powerless to control ourselves. Continue reading

What Are We Facing?

2 Kings 6:16

“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

IMG_0301What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? Some of my friends are starting new appointments today as pastors of United Methodist Churches. Two specifically start serving churches in Crofton and Annapolis. As they meet new people and Sunday preach and lead worship before a new congregation – I will be praying for them. May God richly bless them as they serve with all of their hearts a new people!

What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? Are our marriages having issues? Are the children facing tough times – are we facing tough times with the children? Is our job a trouble spot? Are relationships caving in around us? Is the news causing us pain? Do we have legal issues facing us?  Are we fighting a disease like our governor is facing?  Are we fighting an addiction?

What are we facing today? What challenges are before us? And my next question – what are we doing about these challenges? How are we facing them? Do we try to face them alone – on our own power and strength? Continue reading

Putting Christ First During Lent

Matthew 26:35

Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

profileLent starts on March 5 – Ash Wednesday.  That is the last night of our revival at First UMC.  We hope to see you at First UMC in Laurel soon.  The revival begins on Sunday – March 2 during our morning worship services at 8:15 & 11 am.  It continues each night – Sunday through Wednesday at 7 pm.  We hope to see you there (more information at the bottom of this devotional thought).
