Be Prepared for Life

1 Peter 5:8

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

When I was just a boy – I was a Boy Scout. Be prepared is the Boy Scout’s motto – or it is the song by Scar – envious brother of Mufasa – in the movie Lion King. Being prepared is a good goal for sure. We never know when our lives can change in the next heartbeat. Accidents – sudden deaths – life changing events happen – at times when we least expect them.

A few years ago – life changed for my friend Mike – his family and his friends. He was a well loved teacher at Crofton Meadows Elementary School. He was a man of God loved by most everyone. Several hundred people gathered for his celebration of life service including current and former students and many from our former and current church families. The Board of Education was also well represented – as well as South County folks and friends from all over the area. Mike was well loved by most everyone. Continue reading

Growing in Grace and Knowledge

2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

Pic of Ray 11302014My brother is a Master plumber. He has continually grown in his knowledge over the years. He has memorized much of the codebook and he can do much of his job without looking at any manual. How about you? Have you been working long enough at your job that you have grown in your knowledge enough that you can do your job without looking at instructions?

Growing up as a Boy Scout – I learned that in order to be a good Boy Scout – you had to grow in knowledge and experience. You had things you needed to memorize and things you had to learn. There was a manual for scouting and in order to gain rank or merit badges – you have to grow in knowledge and in experience. Continue reading

Let Your Light So Shine!

Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgHave you ever played flashlight tag? It has to be dark – it is like tag – only you have to tag people with the light shining from your flashlight. It was all the rage back in the 60’s – lol. We played it a lot when we went camping – with the family or with the Boy Scouts. We even played it in youth group outside the church at night! Flashlight tag gave way to – you guessed it – laser tag. They took the idea of flashlight tag – took it indoors – and used sophisticated laser flashlights. It was the same fun with a hi-tech approach.

If you had a stronger flashlight – you could shine it on folks long before they could get their weaker light on you! If it was also small and compact – you could maneuver easier around the tombstones (if you were playing in a cemetery for instance) or around the bushes in the churchyard. Dark clothes were also a plus because they were harder to see and didn’t light up – so to speak – when the light hit them! There were other nuances to the game – but you get the idea. Wearing glow in the dark clothes – whether playing flashlight tag or laser tag is not a good idea. Continue reading
