Let Your Light So Shine

Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

I remember the dark nights and how my father’s lantern on the picnic table would shine and lead us home when we were out and about. Dad kept the globe on the lamp clean and the wick new and it burnt bright. He kept a good supply of fuel in the lamp and in storage. The light would shine in the darkness – and the darkness could not overcome it.

I remember one of my siblings – my brother I believe – needed a night-light early in his life. A little light plugged into a wall outlet – that gave off a dim light. Even in the darkness of the night in the bedroom – this little light was enough to give peace to him as he woke in the night. Continue reading

Become Like Little Children

Matthew 18:3

And he said: Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

My wife and I have five grandchildren. They remind us of when we had little children. Children have a way of trusting – at least until we prove untrustworthy. They will do most anything you ask of them – or at least try it – as long as they feel you are there to catch them or help them or look after them.

I remember my oldest daughter Shelly – when she was two or so. We had gone camping and the campground we were at had a jungle gym type apparatus. She was on the top level and I urged her to jump to daddy. She came to the edge of the platform – her feet were above my head – and jumped into her daddy’s arms. I caught her of course. A year later – we went to the same place and tried the same process. This time she came to the edge and said – but dad I might fall and hurt myself. In a short year – she went from totally trusting her dad to catch her to adding some doubt (by the way – she eventually jumped after some coaching). Continue reading

Keeping Our Eyes On The Cross

James 1:14

…but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.

Sunday in the sermon we mentioned collectables. I mentioned my wife’s snow babies – she has a whole china cabinet full of them. I mentioned my Oriole bobble heads and gnomes – and the member that has a collection that puts mine to shame. A quick search on E-Bay reveals a large number of collectables such as military metals – decorative spoons – china plates – a variety of toys and dolls and more. Collectables can be anything that someone treasures and finds valuable. I’ve seen collections of license plates (trying to get one from every state for instance or all of the Maryland tags going way back. My father collected stickers for his campers – one for each state and park we passed through or camped at during our childhood (and after).

I also mentioned in the sermon that we put a value on our collectables. We determine if the price being asked for an item is worth it to us. I mentioned that paying $495 (plus club rental and a caddy to play Pebble Beach was a bit much for me so I didn’t collect that golf course on my list of courses played. I did buy some golf balls with the course name on it and stepped onto the first tee box! Continue reading

Like a Little Child

Mark 10:15

Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.

profileWhen my oldest daughter was a little girl we went camping as a family with other families from our church and community.  It was a place in northern PA and it had a jungle gym for children.  Shelly was playing on it and it was time for supper.  She had been playing and was on a platform where her feet were higher than my head.  I walked over to the jungle gym and reached out my hands and told her to jump to daddy.  She didn’t question me but came to the edge of the platform and jumped into my waiting arms.  I caught her and we went to eat.

One year later we were at the same camp – she was year older.  Same scenario as before – I told her to jump to daddy and she walked to the edge and looked over at me and said but daddy – I could fall.  In one year she went from total trust to skepticism.  With some encouragement she slower jumped into my arms – but she wasn’t so sure!
