Training Our Children

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

RevRayAs I put this daily thought to bed – I am in my home office listening to some Third Day – as they sing Revelation – on Pandora Radio.  I spend a lot of time listening to music as I work on sermons and devotional thoughts.  Basically I like to listen to music while I do most anything.  I spent much of the morning (up since 4:15 am) seeking His face, while desiring His grace while listening to music.  I have always listened to music while I work.  My dad could never understand how listening to Steppenwolf or Stevie Wonder for example could help me study – but music has always helped me focus.

I’ve mentioned a few times recently that I have two granddaughters.  They are a new joy in my life – Justice most recently but Vyrie was born during a very tough time in my life with the death of my father among other things.  Her smile and joyous spirit have comforted me during a time when I needed it.  I know Justice will as well as she grows into her personality.

This passage came to mind as I was thinking of my granddaughters – These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Continue reading

Impress Them On Your Children

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Tonight as I write the daily thought – I am in my home office listening to some Brooke Fraser – love her voice.  I spent most of last night listening to her sing and praying for this morning’s (Sunday) worship services.  Spending a night in prayer, in the Word of God and in worship is a powerful thing – I invite you to try it if you haven’t.

Were you at 10:30 worship this morning at Mt. Oak?  In the midst of our praise time – when it was time to pray for our children as they departed for children’s worship – Nicole Bontrager came forward to pray.  When she arrived at the front – one of her children – Malachi I think – spoke up from his seat and asked if he could come up and pray.  He is just a young lad.  He came up and spoke from his heart as he spoke with his God.  It was awesome and the congregation showed their appreciation when Pastor Jon mentioned how moved he was by Malachi’s prayer.

This passage came to mind: These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

It is obvious that Bryan & Nicole are striving to raise their children in the ways and teachings of our God.  They may not always get it – does anyone – but this was one of those praise God moments for Bryan & Nicole – for our children’s ministry – and for our congregation.  As we strive to reach the whole family for Christ – we can be assured that along the way we have helped Bryan & Nicole bring Malachi and other children into environments where they can encounter Christ.  We have been used of God to help build them up in their faith and we have in this simple prayer witnessed Malachi put his faith into action – standing before the whole congregation and leading us in prayer – being a witness – being in mission!

If we were looking for signs that God is at work in us – through us – and in spite of us – here was one such sign.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
