Turn To Jesus Daily

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

photo on 6-11-19 at 10.52 amDear readers – have you ever been down? Being down doesn’t mean you are depressed – but it does mean that some things are not going your way. It can lead to depression if not headed off for sure.

If you’re a sports fan – maybe you get down when your favorite team loses (like a Redskin fan this year or the Raven fans the last two weeks). If you work outside the home – maybe you get down when you have a hard day with work or those you work with or serve. If you work from home – maybe the children have had a bad day and that gets you down or some other issue has arisen.

Have you ever been down? As a pastor I try to help people when they are down. I have worked with addicts who are battling for sobriety – and at times that can get us down. I have worked with folks in broken relationships – and we all know that can get us down. I have worked with fellow pastors who have had trouble in their places of service – and I know what that feels like and believe me – it can get you down. I know that I have had times of near depression or maybe even depression – while working on my own issues or helping others work on their issues. Continue reading

Immeasurably More – God’s Love

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

Life ChangeImmeasurably more! That is what the society wants us to want – more and more and more – every year! The Christmas shopping has become a contact sport on Black Fridays. Christmas sales start well before Thanksgiving to draw folks to the stores to purchase immeasurably more! Perfectly good products are jettisoned in order to buy the newest model (I’m updating the hard drives on my computers rather than buying new ones – they will speed up while being more economical than replacing them).

Scripture tells us that if we want immeasurably more – the only way to receive what really matters – is to seek after Jesus and the love that He shares with us. Read with me if you will: Ephesians 3:14-21 – 14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! We Should Ooze Jesus!

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

In my younger days – one of my first jobs was as a Soda Jerk. People loved to order an ice cream cone from me because I gave them a good measure for their money (the pharmacist approved of my methods). A single scoop cone always got a scoop pushed into the cone before a scoop was applied to the top. Nothing worse than an empty cone! I worked at Pink’s drugstore on West Street a block away from my home on Locust Avenue in Annapolis.

One of the reasons I write weekday devotional thoughts is to give the members of the congregations I serve and have served and others more than just Sunday morning theology. I think we need to be digging into Jesus every day – not just on Sunday – and my hope is that these daily thoughts help to trigger something inside us to want immeasurably more from our relationship with Jesus. I try to use everyday ideas and thoughts to connect us with some spiritual thought for the day so that our hearts are pricked to think more about Jesus (let me know if they help). Continue reading

Have You Ever Been Down?

I Desire More!

Ephesians 3:20

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgYesterday I wrote about desiring God.  Today I want to write about desiring more of God!

I use to work at a soda fountain. The place was called Pinks – it was a drug store that had a soda fountain in it and I worked behind the fountain. Yes – that would have made me a Soda Jerk. Wikipedia defines a Soda Jerk this way – a person — typically a youth — who operates the soda fountain in a drugstore, often for the purpose of preparing and serving flavored soda water or an ice cream soda.

As a Soda Jerk – I learned how to make all sorts of sodas and ice cream cones. I learned to make sandwiches – mostly pre-made – all I had to do was heat – but I did make some from scratch. I learned what made customers happy. Usually when it came to ice cream or ice cream sodas – it was more ice cream!

This experience is where my example about the ice cream cone being filled with ice cream and the scoop being packed rather than hollow comes from I use from time to time. I use it when I am describing our faith – and how we should want more – all that God can give us – like a cone packed and the scoop solid – even pouring over the sides! Continue reading
