Following God’s Example

Ephesians 5:1-2

1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

So who stands out in our lives as an example we follow? As a child and a youth – I had favorite ballplayers I followed. Boog Powell – Brooks Robinson – Frank Robinson – were players I liked in my youth. They played for my home team Baltimore Orioles. Eddie Murray – Cal Ripken – and others were baseball players I followed later in my life. In basketball some of my favorites were Wes Unseld – Earl “the Pearl” Monroe and Walt Frazier (from the Baltimore Bullets). In football I liked Johnny Unitas – Raymond Berry – Tom Matte. They were football players – Baltimore Colts – that I followed.

In school I had my favorite teachers – did you? I had my favorite singing groups I followed as well like James Taylor – Cat Stevens – Stevie Wonder – 3 Dog Night – Diana Ross and the Supremes and more. I had men and women who I looked up to in church and in other circles. I looked up to my dad the most. Continue reading

Be Careful

Ephesians 5:15

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise…

I have five granddaughters. All five were over last night and one of the phrases I used a number of times – as they played out back with us on the patio was – be careful. They were running around – playing with each other – and at times they did not think about the consequences of their actions – after all – they are 4 – 4 – 2 – 2 – and the baby is 4 months. They are just excited to see each other and to build on their memory banks of fun.

Our patio has a drop off and rocks too. They will come close to the edge – aware and at times unaware of the danger. They will stand on the big rocks – boulders really – and be queen of the hill. Pop – the oldest family member present – knows the dangers and constantly reminds them to be careful – don’t fall. At times I would get up (other adults too) and walk them away from the edge of the patio or sit so that we could stop them – or at least try to – from falling.

We made it thru the evening without incident. We even got one granddaughter – previously scared of Pop’s lawnmower – to ride with him as he cut some of the yard. For most of the evening – she would stand on the edge of the patio and watch me cutting the backyard. She wanted to ride – like her older sister and cousin had the day before – but when she was placed on the mower – she panicked a little. It took several tries before she would stay on and once we started she was fine the whole time. As she was getting on the mower and off the mower (blades off of course) – Pop could be heard saying – be careful. Continue reading

Making Wise Decisions

Ephesians 5:15

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgMy daughters often heard these words from me – be safe out there – as they left for their day’s activities.  I just told one of them this today – while I was writing this devotional thought.  As a parent – even though they are fully grown – as their father – I still want them to be safe out there.

My wife would often tell all three of our daughters – as they left the house for school or a date or some sporting event – make wise decisions. They may not have always done so – who among us has – but they knew that was the desire of their parent’s heart for them. That is our heavenly Father’s heart for us as well.  Being safe and making wise decisions is the hope of every parent for their children. Continue reading
