Delivered From All Our Fears

Psalm 34:4

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

RayMcDWhat is it we are afraid of today? Some have expressed a real fear over the Zika Virus – and it is a scary thing for sure – especially for women who wish to bare children or are pregnant now. The Zika Virus has arrived on the shores of the USA most recently. The virus has come to the USA as infected mosquitos on U.S. soil have bitten some people. The medical community is telling us that it is doing all it can to combat this virus. Fear still runs rampant among some in our southern states – and maybe for good reason.

What is it we are afraid of today? The economy shows some signs of recovery while the number of people out of work seems to be increasing. People are wondering when they should pull their money out of the stock market as some say a crash is near. No one really knows. Being able to pay our bills – especially in retirement – is a real concern for some. Continue reading

Large and In-Charge

Hebrews 13:5

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

RevRayMcHave you ever been left alone? I remember – years ago – when the Left Behind series came out and some years ago when the Home Alone movies came out (25+ years ago) – there was a fear about being left behind or alone.

Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) – an 8 year-old left home alone – had some scary experiences. His family was so busy getting ready for their trip that they forgot him in the shuffle. I remember shopping once with our first child. Carolyn and I both thought the other had Shelly and Shelly wandered off. Immediately panic set in as I was telling folks to lockdown the store – no one gets out until I find my daughter. Shelly was holding court with some sales persons – she was calm – but her mother and I will never forget that experience. Continue reading

Place Your Trust in Jesus!

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

profileDo any of your children (or you) have trouble in the dark?  Do you use – or do your children use – a nightlight?  I remember when I first got married – my new wife couldn’t go to sleep with the closet door open.  Maybe she had some childhood dreams or visions of things in her closet in the dark coming to life and scaring her.  Does the dark scare you?

I’ve written about this before – but it fits here too.  When I was younger – a child – we lived next to a cemetery.  At night we played hide-and-seek and I would often hide in the cemetery and almost always won because my friends or relatives wouldn’t come into the cemetery at night.  And if they did – I would make noises and sounds that scared them away.  I used their fear of the darkness and the unknown to help me win the game!  They would often try to get rules established about not hiding in the cemetery but I would never go along with it! Fear Not

Psalm 118:6

The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

profileToday’s devotional thought was delayed – it somehow didn’t go out like it should – so I moved it to tomorrow and will do a new one for today.  It will be short and sweet.

I remember the first time I was on fast running water.  My new wife and I went white water rafting in Pennsylvania – on the Lower Youghiogheny River I believe.  It was amazing – but a little scary for a land lover.  We didn’t turn over – but some of the rafts in our group did and I will say before you worry – they all made it safely back to the raft.

We came upon a still water area and so we all got in line to jump off this big rock into a deep part of the river.  I will tell you now – I had jumped off high things before – into water – I wasn’t scared at all.  That is until I hit the water – it was freezing – the water – coming down off the mountain from the melted snow.  I lost my breath for a moment – and was scared – fear gripped me and I thought – will I ever come up and catch my breath?
