The Lord Is Our Lamp

2 Samuel 22:29

You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.

112015 Ray McDonaldI have a thing about light switches. If the lights are off – the switch needs to be down – even if there are two or three switches that run the same light – they all need to be in the right position. I know – I have issues. I will walk through a dark room in order to hit the switch on the other side of the room or to keep the switches in the right position. I will turn our kitchen light on and go to the other side of the room to turn it off (to get the switches in the right position) – and then walk through the dark kitchen. It is a wonder I like Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory?

I’m so glad my cell phone has a flashlight on it. It has helped me many times coming through the basement – with very little natural light and few switches! At least the upstairs has lots of natural light sources and unless it is night – I can see where I am going. Continue reading

A Lamp For My Feet

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgI wrote about playing flashlight tag the other day. Flashlight tag turned into Laser tag and even – as someone mentioned – saber lasers in the movies!

I’ve written about Boy Scouts and camping before and one of the things I remember doing on camping trips is going down dark paths with a flashlight. Flashlights will illuminate the path before you (if the batteries hold out). Step by step you can see the path before you. If you have a really good flashlight – you might see a few steps forward.

One of the short falls of a flashlight is that normally it is limited in where it can illuminate. Depending on how strong it is – a few steps or even a few yards ahead is the limit. Also – the flashlight normally only shines in the direction you have pointed it. Continue reading

Let Your Light So Shine!

Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgHave you ever played flashlight tag? It has to be dark – it is like tag – only you have to tag people with the light shining from your flashlight. It was all the rage back in the 60’s – lol. We played it a lot when we went camping – with the family or with the Boy Scouts. We even played it in youth group outside the church at night! Flashlight tag gave way to – you guessed it – laser tag. They took the idea of flashlight tag – took it indoors – and used sophisticated laser flashlights. It was the same fun with a hi-tech approach.

If you had a stronger flashlight – you could shine it on folks long before they could get their weaker light on you! If it was also small and compact – you could maneuver easier around the tombstones (if you were playing in a cemetery for instance) or around the bushes in the churchyard. Dark clothes were also a plus because they were harder to see and didn’t light up – so to speak – when the light hit them! There were other nuances to the game – but you get the idea. Wearing glow in the dark clothes – whether playing flashlight tag or laser tag is not a good idea. Continue reading

Let Your Light Shine

Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

profileI had a friend when I was a teen who put a side light – a search light – on his car (like the police had/have).  It was awesome – we could shine a light in any direction.  We used it to help us see to pull a friend’s car out of a ditch in the dark.  It shined in the darkness and allow us to work to free our friend’s car.

I remember camping as a youth in Boy Scouts.  A flashlight was always a helpful piece of equipment when night-time came upon us.  If we needed to go out in the dark – say to the bathroom or to the shower or to get some water/food – it was helpful to have a flashlight to shine in the darkness. Lighting the Path

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

RevRayRecently during one of the many storms that have hit this spring the threat was for widespread power failure – or at least the potential for power outages because of the expected high winds and heavy rains.  We scrambled to find our flashlights before we went to bed that night just to be prepared.  A flashlight can be a very helpful tool when all of the lights go out and you need to get up in the dark for any reason.

Have you ever been in the dark?  Have you ever needed a little light?  I remember camping in the woods on Skyline Drive as a child and wondering off from camp before dark only to be caught away from camp in the dark without a flashlight (I was a boy scout but wasn’t prepared).  As it got dark dad lit a lamp in camp and I followed the light of that lamp back to camp.
