Your View of Marriage Is Important

Genesis 2:18

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

fullsizeoutput_ffeWhat are your views on marriage? If you were asked about your views – what would you be prepared to say? Our denomination is dealing with this right now as we process how we understand Scripture. The debate is not really about marriage – although that is one of the presenting issues. The discussion or debate is about the authority of Scripture and how we interpret God’s Word. Today’s devotional thought is about marriage – what are our views?

In this day and age when people are living together before or without marriage in alarming numbers – divorcing at an ever-increasing rate – when debates rage concerning who may get married (same-sex partners) – what are our view on marriage? It is important to know where we stand on issues of importance like marriage – the cornerstone of our society. We need marriage as a foundation of our culture. The family is a main stronghold. Think about it!

A great place to start the discussion on marriage would be the Word of God – the Bible. What does God tell us – thru His Holy Word – about marriage? Here are a few passages.

Genesis 2:18The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Continue reading

Let’s Not Stir Up Dissension

Proverbs 6:16, 19

The LORD hates… a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

Ray 2018One of my favorite sayings is Christianity boils down to attitude. I often follow that phrase with the following – Christianity boils down to attitude – the condition and position of one’s heart. Scripture tell us in Matthew 6:21 – For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Attitude is everything says a little stone marker on my office desk. I believe that the heart – the attitude we have – is so very important. I celebrated the life of a friend who told his children that attitude meant everything in life.

Each time I pray for the men who gather to play basketball early in the morning at Riva Trace Baptist Church – I pray for an attitude check – that our attitudes would be a blessing and not a hinderance to our witness and our exercise. As Christians we are called to have the attitude of Christ in the scriptures. Philippians 2:5 – Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Continue reading

General Conference 2019 – Part 3

2 Timothy 3:16–17

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God  may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Scripture is the base of our understanding of God. It is often where those who differ in their understanding of God depart from one another. Scriptural authority is often the real issue when presenting issues surface. In the United Methodist Church today – the presenting issue is the nature of human sexuality. The real issue – can the Scriptures be believed and held as authoritative in our lives today.

For the next few days I will include articles written by some leaders in the United Methodist Church concerning the upcoming special General Conference of 2019 (#GC2019). Now that our Annual Conference is over – I want to make sure our readers are informed about the upcoming #GC2019. You can return and read the previous posts here and here.

Today I include an article written by Maxie Dunnam as he writes about the Way Forward and gives us insights into the upcoming General Conference 2019. His article is found on the Confessing Movement’s page which is located at The Confessing Movement within the United Methodist Church. You can read his article in it’s entirety here if you wish to respond to it directly. I include parts of his article below. You can respond on this blog page if you wish as well. Continue reading
