We Are All A Part Of The Whole

1 Corinthians 12:27

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

When I was in school – grade school – Junior & Senior High – I was in the school band. I played trumpet (or in some of our music it was called a cornet). In High School I played in the Orchestra – the Pep Band – the Concert Band and the Marching Band. These bands were a conglomeration of different persons with different talents. When the director got us all on the same page and the same beat – we made some pretty good music. We won awards even for some of our efforts.

The same can be said about the sport teams I played on in High School. A group of different people – working toward a common goal – and we had a measure of success. I’m sure if you’ve been on any team or group – you may have experienced the same.

Churches are like this as well. Churches are made up of a collection of different people trying to make great music together – trying to achieve goals together. Continue reading

Is Our Church Open?

Galatians 3:26-29

26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

112015 Ray McDonaldThis was such a radical idea in the day that Paul lived.  The Jewish Church was not very open to people who were different than them or didn’t follow their rules.  Peter and some of the other disciples even wanted the Gentiles who came to Christ to become Jewish before they could become Christians.  Just like this picture of a cat and a dog sleeping together – some thought Paul was crazy to suggest what God gave him to write – You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

When Paul wrote in his Epistle (letter) to the churches in Galatia the words of today’s Scripture lesson – I would imagine that eyes rolled – some argued and some jumped ship.  No difference between Jew and Greek (Gentile = anyone not Jewish) – are you kidding me?  No difference between slaves (different type of slaves than early America but slaves none-the-less) and free – what is this radical religion you are writing about Paul?  No male or female – now you’re really stepping in it Paul.  There are differences for a reason.  I can hear some people saying separate but equal under their breath.
