Seek First The Important Things!

Matthew 6:33

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Think about this for a moment. What is the most important thing in your life? Think before you answer – and don’t give me what you wish were most important or think should be most important. Someone once said if you want to know what is really important to a person – just look at the person’s checkbook. I’ll add – take a look at their credit card bills and their online spending too! Do we spend more money on things that are really only peripheral things in our lives? Do we own that boat or does that boat own us? Are our hobbies that important to our lives?

The Sunday School answer – of course – would be Jesus! Jesus should be most important in our lives. We have been bought and paid for by the blood of the Lamb and He owns us – 1 Corinthians 6:20 – you were bought at a price. At least – God should own us – but at times we act as if we own ourselves. At times we act as if we are more important than God. Continue reading

Keeping Our Eyes On The Cross

James 1:14

…but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.

Sunday in the sermon we mentioned collectables. I mentioned my wife’s snow babies – she has a whole china cabinet full of them. I mentioned my Oriole bobble heads and gnomes – and the member that has a collection that puts mine to shame. A quick search on E-Bay reveals a large number of collectables such as military metals – decorative spoons – china plates – a variety of toys and dolls and more. Collectables can be anything that someone treasures and finds valuable. I’ve seen collections of license plates (trying to get one from every state for instance or all of the Maryland tags going way back. My father collected stickers for his campers – one for each state and park we passed through or camped at during our childhood (and after).

I also mentioned in the sermon that we put a value on our collectables. We determine if the price being asked for an item is worth it to us. I mentioned that paying $495 (plus club rental and a caddy to play Pebble Beach was a bit much for me so I didn’t collect that golf course on my list of courses played. I did buy some golf balls with the course name on it and stepped onto the first tee box! Continue reading

Do We Love Hunting?

Luke 19:10

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

IMG_0301I love hunting for things – like lost golf balls. I find them in places other than golf courses (like I have found a few along the side of the road when I am walking) – but mainly I find them where others don’t look (either because they don’t care or would rather buy new ones rather than go into the woods or water looking for their bad shots).

I love hunting for things – like hidden items in pictures (I remember as a child looking in the Highlights Magazine).  Finding hidden items in the picture was fun – as long as someone hadn’t come along before me and circled the items!  I also liked finding what was different between two fairly identical pictures.  My mind loves to figure out what doesn’t belong in a picture!

I love hunting for things – like good deals. I like searching for the lowest gasoline price in our area. I enjoy getting discounts on things – like buy one and get one or two free! I usually buy one and get one free with my suits for example. Continue reading
