The Schemes of the Devil

1 Peter 5:8-9

8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Yesterday – we preached on keeping the faith and spreading our faith. We also preached about the devil’s schemes. This morning I feel compelled (obligated, duty-bound) to call on all who will to pray for the church and for your pastors and leaders. Whichever church you may attend – please pray for your church family and leaders. According to Scripture we are to be awake and aware and ready: 1 Peter 5:8-98 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith,

The devil is out there and wants nothing more than to devour the Church! Part of standing firm is to stay in prayer together. Pray that the devil not be given even a foothold in our lives and in the church. As Scripture says; Ephesians 4:25-2825 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. Colossians 3:3

For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

RayMcDSunday we talked about Submitting to God in our Sunday message at First United Methodist Church of Laurel. You can listen to the sermon here. The message was part four of a five part series titled 5 Themes From James.

Some key verses from this message were as follows.

Matthew 16:24 – Then Jesus said to his disciples, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

James 4:7-8 – 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Today’s passage in this devotional thought is a good follow up to the message from Sunday. It reminds us that we are called to die to self (deny self – the carnal nature) and be reborn in Christ (the spiritual self or nature). We referred to this passage as well – about the new nature.

2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! Continue reading
