Thanksgiving Day 2019

Colossians 2:6-7

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Ray 2019It doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving weather this year. Yesterday it was nearly 60 degrees. I worked some in the yard – blowing leaves and cutting the grass (mulching leaves mainly). Today is should hit 50 – so it is going down some. My weather app says it will be highs in the 40’s the rest of the week with lows in the low 30’s. I fired up our wood furnace this morning – because it was chilly – and now the house is too warm.

How will you spend your day today? I have some gospel music playing and I’m at my desk doing my devotions. What does your Thanksgiving morning look like? What will your day include? Will you be spending some time with family?

I stumbled onto this passage and it touched my heart.  Let’s look at it in partial context. Colossians 2:6-10 – 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.  8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. Keeping Things Fresh and Green

Psalm 92:14

They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green,

Life ChangeOk – the season is upon us – my wife has begun to decorate for Christmas. Have you started at your home yet? Do you have a tradition? Do you decorate the day after Thanksgiving – or do you shop that day and decorate on another day? Do you do it slowing – or all at once? Is it a family event or does one person pretty much take the lead?

At our home – my wife is the decorator (there are stories I could tell you about what happens when I help – but that is for another post). I usually put up the tree – with help – but she pretty much does the decorating. I help bring down the boxes – but she puts things up. She starts slowly and works up to being finished a few weeks before Christmas – at times as early as the 1st of December.

What traditions are important to you around Christmas decorating – if any? I know people who have fully decorated trees they simply put away decorated and bring them out for Christmas. I know people who leave their tree up year-round. I knew a couple – my dear friends Tom & Doris – who used to put a tree up in every room. Personally – I like the decorations – but I think I could do without them. Don’t get me wrong – I love Christmas. My dad loved Christmas and I have good memories of Christmas as a child. But Christmas for me has always been family – music – worship and seeing family and friends. The decorations are nice – but not essential for me. Continue reading

Advent Attitude Check

Philippians 2:5

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

Life ChangeAdvent is in the second week and Christmas is only 16 days away – counting today and Christmas Day. Are you excited yet? What do you do to prepare for the Christmas season? A niece of mine and her married family always bake dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies that their family (and extended family) baked together. It is a family tradition for her husband’s family. They certainly look good and if I could taste them – I imagine they taste good too. I will try to resist cookies this Christmas season – LOL.

What do you do to prepare for Christmas? What do you do in this time of waiting and anticipating (Advent)? Were you active on Cyber Monday shopping online? Now they call the whole time – throughout the week – Cyber Week – so if we missed the one day – we were able to catch up throughout the week (maybe even the whole month). Have any of us hit the Malls yet? Have we baked some cookies? Have we planned our parties and the ones we will attend? Have we picked out that perfect gift for our loved ones? Advent – A Time to Anticipate

Ephesians 1:7

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.

Life ChangeAs we enter Advent (yesterday) and head toward Christmas – I want to make sure we know how very important Christmas is for us. Today I want to celebrate what Christmas is all about – the coming of Christ – the One who sacrificed His life for us. Not so much that He came – so very important – but why He came. He didn’t come to be a baby in a manger – although the secular world would like us to focus on buying and selling at Christmas – or at the very least – the little helpless baby in a manger – Jesus came to be the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.  He came to die for our sins – to pay the debt of our sin – for our redemption. It was God’s plan from before creation.

We all need Jesus. We all need forgiveness from our sins. We have all sinned and all stand in need of redemption – Romans 3:23-24 – 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Our Attitude During Advent/Christmas
