The Darkness Cannot Overcome The Light – Jesus

John 1:5

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Have you ever tried to go from one doorway to another in a room that is without any lights? There is a room in my basement that only has a switch at one door and not the other. If for some reason I go out in the light or someone follows me and turns off the light – I must return in the dark. It is not always easy for sure! Thank God for the flashlight app on my iPhone. It has helped me avoid stubbing my toe many times.

But – I have often gone around in the dark because I like the light switches to be in the right direction (you know – up for on and down for off). If I turn the light on at one door and off at the next – the switches get out of sequence (I know – a little OCD of me for sure). It is my issue – I’m sure I am alone! Walking in the dark is no fun I must say. Continue reading

Truth Or A Lie

Colossians 2:8

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Where do we go for truth? In this day and age – truth is hard to come by. Fake news is all the rage it seems. The media reports what supports their agenda or what sells their papers or commercials.

Where do we go for truth? Do we seek truth in the history of men and women? Do you search for truth among the stories of our country or of the world? All the rage these days is bringing down historic figures that don’t tell the tale we would like (I’m totally against neo-Nazis and white supremacy) – but I’m not convinced that the destruction of historic monuments is the way to go (where will we stop – I’ve heard some would like to destroy monuments of George Washington because of some of his sins). Let Jesus Light The Way

Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?

Photo on 7-6-16 at 3.42 PMHave we ever walked in the darkness? I am one of those people who must have the light switches going in the correct direction (up in on – down is off). With that said – you know I have stumbled through a dark room so I wouldn’t get the light switches in the wrong position. Crazy – right?

Have we ever walked in the darkness? I’m so thankful my cell phone has a flashlight on it. I use it often (see above paragraph) while walking in darkness – inside and outside. I only have one switch in part of my basement and when the light is off and it is dark outside – I need the flashlight in order to walk through till I get to the switch (which is always up for on and down for off). Having a light to shine in the darkness is important for sure.

Have we ever walked in the darkness? Have we ever felt like we were lost – without focus – without a purpose? We can feel that way as an individual or a family or a church or even a country. Yesterday in worship at First UMC in Laurel I spoke a little about broken hearts. When we break up with a significant other – dating or in marriage – we often feel lost – walking in the darkness. Listen to the sermon for some suggestions on how to mend a broken heart (http://fumcl.org/sermons) (because it was VBS Sunday the sermon may not get uploaded until the middle of the week). The Light Shines In The Darkness

Your Word Is A Lamp To My Feet

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

RayBlogHave you ever been in the dark?  It woke early on Thursday morning to check on the snow that had been forecast.  It was plenty dark.  I couldn’t see even a few feet outside the house.  I hit a switch and the floodlights came on and I could see clearly!  In a world full of darkness and sin – read the Word of God and you will be able to see clearly!  The Psalmist writes – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

Speaking of being in the dark – I can remember camping as a youth – our family often went to Skyline Drive to camp.  I can remember a night when we were in our tent and we heard a rip as the tarp over the utility trailer where we kept our food was being torn.  In the dark it was hard to see what was happening so dad shined his flashlight on the tarp which was now up in the air.  Dad yelled – OK – I have my light on you.  As the tarp fell a large bear was behind the tarp and just then the camper next door hit a floodlight on the side of his camper and in the light we saw the bear running off.  A little light can shine in the darkness and reveal much.

bibleJohn 1:1-5 – 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

The Bible – the Word of God – the story of the Messiah – the Christ – is a powerful tool – a light that shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot put it out!  2 Timothy 3:16-17 – 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Psalmist writes – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.  Where is there darkness in your life today?  Where has Satan gained a foothold and taken away the clarity you once had in your spiritual vision?  Did into the Word of God on a daily basis – dig into its truth and its encouragement.  Allow the Word to speak truth into your life – into your spiritual eyes – so you can see once again.  Let the Word be a light on your path today – spend time in prayer and searching the Word first thing each morning and see where God will lead you.

A good way to get into the Word each day is by reading a regular – scheduled – planned reading assignment.  You can find many at https://www.youversion.com/reading-plans.  Currently I am reading a yearly reading plan – Draw Near – 365 Guides to Greater Intimacy with God and a 21 day reading plan – Lead Like Jesus: 21 Days of Leadership.  Try one – you will find it very uplifting and it will shine the light of Christ in your heart and on your day.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
