Do We Love One Another?

John 13:35

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

photo on 6-11-19 at 10.52 amDo we have a hard time loving others or showing love to others? I know some men who have a hard time showing love – or even saying I love you to family members. Speaking of men – we have our monthly men’s ministry meeting tonight at 7 pm. I hope to see you there.

Typically it is easier to say I love you to those who love us back or do nice things to us or for us. If someone is nice to us or shows us respect – it would seem easier to love them – right?

Loving others is not an easy command from Jesus. In today’s passage Jesus says that others will know we are His followers – His disciples – if we love one another. Think for a moment – are there folks we have a hard time loving?

Here’s today’s passage in partial context. John 13:34–35 – 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Continue reading

One Who Serves

Luke 22:27

I am among you as one who serves.

IMG_0301Would you rather serve or be served? Some would really rather serve than be served – some would rather be served. I know people who serve others all the time – and yet they have a hard time allowing others to serve them when they have a need. I imagine there are those who don’t have a preference for serving or being served.

As Christians – we are called to serve others – to even think of others above ourselves – to love others like Christ loves us. John 13:34-35 – 34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

The call for Christians is to serve others – to follow the example set by our Lord – Jesus – who came not to be served – but rather to serve others. Mark 10:45 – For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Continue reading

Loving One Another

John 13:34-35

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.  35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

profileThis is Monday’s devotional but I am sending it to my congregation via e-mail on Friday so that they have time to think about it before Sunday.  Sunday we’re going to be preaching on David: A Man after God’s Own Heart.  We’re going to talk some about our worship and our witness and what might hinder these.

A committee (I know – that is a bad word for some) met last night (Thursday) and talked about ways of connecting our congregation – current attendees and visitors.  We talked about a number of ways to bring this about.  I know last Monday another committee (there’s that bad word again) met to talk about ways to share in fellowship together as a congregation.  On Tuesday morning in a Bible Study I attend we talked about ways to let folks know we’re glad they attended worship with us and to let those who have missed a few Sundays know that we miss them.  A clergy meeting I attended this week talked about this same subject – connecting the folks in the congregation and ministering to the body. Do Everything In Love

1 Corinthians 16:13-14

13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. 14 Do everything in love.

RevRayDid you see the movie Courageous?  I saw a preview showing before it hit the movie theaters and thought it was one of the best movies I had seen in a long time.  It was action packed – it had several plots playing out at the same time (real life) – it had people standing firm in the faith and sharing love.  I would encourage every church to show this movie in their men’s ministry and church-wide too.

Here’s a preview clip from the movie.  It shows men in real life situations – like raising children – being let go at work – the death of a child – marriage issues.  It can be life changing.  Here’s the clip.
