Thoughts and Reflections

Day 27 of Lent 2018

John 13:34

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Today is day 27 of the 40 Days of Lent reading plan on www.youversion.com. I hope we have all kept up with the reading plan. Lent is the 40 days leading up to the cross of Calvary. Stay current with the reading or go back and catch up.

Today’s reading is about the Last Supper and has lots in it – make sure you read the whole reading below.  The verse I picked to reflect upon is near the end of the reading for the day – verse 34. Jesus said A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. We are called to love others – one another – as Christ loved us. The example of His love was just foretold as He talked about His betrayal and death. Jesus’ love is even for those who would turn against Him – if they repent and return to Him. He even loved us – Scripture says – before we loved Him. Something to think about today! Continue reading

Love Is Essential – It is Required

John 13:34

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

RayMcDLove is essential. Without love we will not represent Jesus well in a world that so needs Jesus. We are even told we will be forgiven as we forgive others – and forgiveness requires love.

Luke 11:4 – Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.  And lead us not into temptation.

Often in the Bible we are told that what we do will be done to us or that we must model the example of Jesus in all we do. Loving our enemies is hard – but at times loving those in our own church family appears to be hard as well. Satan loves division in the church and will try to pit members – sisters and brothers in Christ – against each other.

Jesus – teaching His disciples – His followers – about love – said these words in today’s passage: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. Continue reading

For God So Loved Us

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

112015 Ray McDonaldGod loves us and we are called to love God.  God so loved us – according to today’s passage – that He gave His own life for our lives.  God the Father so loved the world that He gave us God the Son to suffer death upon the Cross of Calvary for our redemption.  Today’s passage is a favorite of many.  John 3:16 is often put on posters at golf tournaments!

As Holy Week unfolds before us – we are being reminded of the love of God.  God’s love is what our walk with Jesus should be all about dear readers.  Romans 5:8 – But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  John 15:13 – Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  1 John 4:9–10 – 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Showing God’s Love

John 13:34

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.

IMG_0301I can remember – as a youngster – yes – that is a long time ago – passing notes in class. Do you remember passing notes? We would get in trouble if the teacher caught us. I remember getting notes that said – I like you – do you like me? Did you ever get one like that?

In elementary school the girls put together little information booklets. They passed them around and everyone was asked to answer the questions. A question in one of the booklets I got was – do you like Dark Shadows? I thought they meant dark shadows in the night. I wasn’t into watching that TV show – didn’t even know that show existed. I said I like dark shadows. The next page in the booklet starting asking questions about the TV show – talking about the characters and such and I was lost! Continue reading
