Let Us Clothe Ourselves With Christ

Colossians 3:12

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Dear readers – did you have any favorite clothes growing up? I apparently – according to old photos – had a favorite cowboy shirt and a red baseball hat. In my of my childhood pictures from a certain age – that was what I had on. I still have favorite clothes – enjoying the more casual look over anything dressy. When I was a teen I had a favorite hat that was always on my head it seems. I remember when I finally had to give it up – it was old – torn and smelled from years of sweating in it. I remember buying it with my own money at Ocean City one year. I know my girlfriends probably didn’t like it much – but it was a favorite!

As a pastor – I know there are proper times to wear certain clothes. For instance – I have a funeral this afternoon (this was written on Wednesday) and I have my collar and dress jacket to put on before I go. I will return to the office for meetings this evening and will put on my church shirt – a polo shirt with my name and the church’s name on it. I hardly ever wear a tie anymore – using the clergy collar shirt when I need to dress up. Continue reading

We Are Chosen People!

Colossians 3:12

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

RayMcDI use a lot of athletic examples. Sorry if that doesn’t work for you. Most of us can remember recess in Elementary school. Do we remember when they would pick up teams for kickball or dodgeball? Do we remember being the last chosen or not being chosen at all? For those who have been chosen last or not at all – I assume it was not a good feeling for sure. We all like to be chosen – even if only for a kickball game.

It is a good feeling – being chosen. There were times I was the one picking up sides (in elementary school). At times I might be the first or second player picked by someone else. Either way it felt good to know your services were wanted on someone’s team. I remember the same feeling when picked for teams in the classroom too – like for a spelling bee or a math competition. When picked – we were expected to give our very best to the team effort. That would mean playing hard at whatever sport or coming up with the answer to the math problem before the other team. I rarely got picked for the spelling bee teams but did get picked for the math competition or the debate team. Continue reading

The Fruits of the Spirit – Kindness and Goodness

Galatians 5:22-26

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

82015 RayWe’re starting back up this week examining the Fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5 – today we will deal with the fifth and sixth fruits listed – kindness & goodness.

What do you think of when you hear the words kindness and goodness?  A few verses before the Gifts of the Spirit are listed in Galatians 5 we read the following words.

Galatians 5:6 – For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

When I think of kindness and goodness – I think of the heart of Christ.  It is often contrary to my heart.  I am not by nature a mercy person.  I can express mercy – but only because of the grace of God – it isn’t from my natural fabric.  The heart of God – the heart of Christ is seen best – for me – in the following passage. Kindness and Goodness – Natural or Not – We are to be like-minded with Christ

Philippians 2:1-5 – 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

If we have any tenderness and compassion – we are to be like-minded with Christ – showing kindness and goodness to others.  Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Thinking of others first is what comes to mind when I think of kindness and goodness.  It may not be part of our natural fabric – but it is what we are to strive to be – being like-minded with Christ.  Asking ourselves over and over – What Would Jesus Do?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

Shower Those Around You in Kindness

Colossians 3:12

12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

As people of God – the chosen people – the called of God – we are called to be holy and to cloth ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. As you start your day today – think on this passage and the call to live in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Where in your day could you show more kindness?  According to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary – kindness is a kind deed or the quality or state of being kind. Examples might include – doing an act of kindness as simple as holding a door for someone, or helping someone pick up supplies that fell on the floor at work.

How can you show kindness to those around you today?  I bet there are opportunities galore.  Like letting someone with a few items at the grocer go in front of you when you have a full cart?  Like letting someone watch his or her favorite show on TV, even when it is your turn to watch what you want?  Look around you today and seek places where you could show the kindness of God.  Remember to give God the glory when they exclaim how kind you are!  Can you think of some ways you could share on the blog page?

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

Tomorrow we will look at showing gentleness.
