Seek First The Important Things!

Matthew 6:33

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Think about this for a moment. What is the most important thing in your life? Think before you answer – and don’t give me what you wish were most important or think should be most important. Someone once said if you want to know what is really important to a person – just look at the person’s checkbook. I’ll add – take a look at their credit card bills and their online spending too! Do we spend more money on things that are really only peripheral things in our lives? Do we own that boat or does that boat own us? Are our hobbies that important to our lives?

The Sunday School answer – of course – would be Jesus! Jesus should be most important in our lives. We have been bought and paid for by the blood of the Lamb and He owns us – 1 Corinthians 6:20 – you were bought at a price. At least – God should own us – but at times we act as if we own ourselves. At times we act as if we are more important than God. Continue reading

Christmas Is Coming – Where Is Our Heart?

Luke 12:34

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Christmas is fast approaching. The remembrance of Christ’s birth is fast approaching. We will begin singing Christmas this coming Sunday to help prepare us for the season. I know the stores have been advertising Christmas since July 4th is seems – but now – it is merely 20 days away.

So – what is on your list for Christmas this year? Would you like a new iPad Pro – even if you have a workable iPad or other pad? How about the latest video game? We use to get loads of clothes for Christmas – at times we got them early so we could wear them before Christmas – like a winter coat if it got really cold early in the fall. I remember marking things in the Sears Christmas catalog for my parents when it came out. What new tech item is out we might want? What new item for our Christmas decorations do we want or have we gotten already? Christmas is only a short time away. Continue reading

What Do We Treasure?

Luke 12:34

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

One of my nephews just purchased several large crates full of baseball cards. I found him the other evening going through them – sorting out teams – Hall of Fame players – and some others groupings. He was in his glory – a sports fan with sports memorabilia. As I was leaving I asked him to find some duplicates of some nice players and sell them to his uncle. For those who have been in my office at church – you know I have a display of Hall of Fame players on my wall. I love baseball – the American pastime.

Another thing I enjoy is collecting hats – baseball style hats. I have several from the Orioles – the Ravens – the University of Maryland – the Redskins – the FBI – golf hats of many brands like Titleist – Callaway – SR (the golf club at South River) – Twin Shields – and more. I have one with a cross on it and others as well. My home office door has three straps with hooks for hats on it. My closet in the bedroom has about a dozen hats that I wear the most. One shelf at work is decorated with hats (stop by them and see). I gave several dozen away to Goodwill recently because I couldn’t wear them all or keep them all (said the boss). Continue reading

Christmas Is A Short Time Away

Luke 12:34

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

RayMcDChristmas is a short time away – just in case you haven’t been to any of the retail stores of late. I mean – some had Christmas stuff up this past summer – some before Thanksgiving  all have it up now! In worship we are singing Advent songs and Christmas songs (I know – liturgically they are not supposed to be sung yet – but – I love them so – as do our folks).

So what is on your list for Christmas? Would you like an iPad Pro – even if you have a workable iPad or other pad? How about the latest video game? We use to get loads of clothes for Christmas – at times we got them early so we could wear them before Christmas – like a winter coat if it got cold early. I remember marking things in the Sears Christmas catalog for my parents when it came out. Christmas is only a short time away.

If we were in Sunday School or at a beauty pageant – we might say our wish for everyone to receive Jesus or peace on earth. Thinking on a more spiritual level – what is it we would wish for this Christmas – if we could wish and it would come true? I mean – what do we treasure the most? The passage this morning says that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also.  So – what do we treasure? Continue reading

What Is It That We Treasure?

Luke 12:34

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

112015 Ray McDonaldMy daughter from California called tonight and told me something that brought a tear to my eye. My oldest granddaughter saw someone that looked like me and got all excited that Pop was there! Her mother had to explain that Pop was not there but that she would see him soon. I can’t wait to see her and her sister and her parents soon. My grandchildren have my heart for sure. My eight women – wife – three daughters – and four granddaughters – have my heart. They are my treasure!

What is it we treasure? What is it that we hold dear? Is it something material? It is someone? Is it our own desires? Is it Jesus?  What is it we treasure?

In today’s passage Jesus tells us that what we treasure will have our heart. Luke 12:34 – For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Continue reading
