Love More And Have A Better Attitude

Romans 15:5

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had…

I’ve written a number of posts over the years about attitude. I believe attitude is so very important – possibly essential in our Christian walk. One of my favorite sayings has to do with attitude and Christianity. It goes like this – Christianity boils down to attitude – the condition and position of one’s heart. But how do we improve our attitude toward someone – especially someone who has hurt us or who is unlikeable?

Our love for one another and our love for God – has a lot to do with our attitude. The Bible says that if we don’t have love then we have nothing – and we are nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:2 – If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. Having and expressing love – Christ-like love – is at the core of our faith. When We Serve – We Serve The Lord!

1 Peter 4:11

If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.

Photo on 6-21-16 at 2.53 PMIn church life – there is always a discussion about paid persons and volunteers. I heard an SPRC chair recently say we’re all servants of God – some of us just do more serving and so some get paid for it – but we all serve our Lord (or something like that).

I know some volunteers who do more than some paid staff – but putting that aside – the real issue is how we view our service. Is our service different if we are paid verses being a volunteer? Should we serve differently when we are volunteers – since we are not being paid?

In church life – this debate often rages. I hear comments like – I’m only a volunteer or I’m not getting paid. For some – not getting paid means they can do it or not do it – since they are only a volunteer. Continue reading

Christ’s Attitude

Philippians 2:5

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

112015 Ray McDonaldAs many readers and church members know – one of my favorite sayings goes like this – Christianity boils down to attitude.  I have been known to elaborate on that by saying – Christianity boils down to attitude – the condition and position of one’s heart.

I enjoy writing about Christ’s attitude because we are called – as the church – to have a Christ like attitude.  It (the attitude of Christ) is missing at times in the church (isn’t it?).  I know that sounds judgmental – and I don’t mean it to be – but after being in church life my whole life and in ministry for 40 years I can honestly say the attitude of Christ is not always felt by me or others from good church people or their pastors.  Not that any of us are perfect – but that is what we are striving toward.  We should be striving to have the heart and attitude of Christ.

Here are a few examples (and feel free to post some additional ones please).  If the purpose of the church is to reach the lost – teach the saved – and turnaround and reach the lost again – why are so many churches dying?  It might just involve our attitudes.  Here is the Great Commission given to us by Jesus – our marching orders – Matthew 28:19-20 – 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Continue reading

The Fruits of the Spirit – Love

Galatians 5:22-26

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

82015 RayOver the next few days we will examine the Fruits of the Spirit as found in Galatians 5. We’ve written a lot about attitude over the years.  Our love quotient goes a long way toward having the right attitude my friends.

The first fruit listed is love.  Love is THE most important of the fruits – because without love we could have all the rest – all of the fruits and gifts of the Spirit – and something would still be missing.

1 Corinthians 13:2 – If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

We are called to imitate Christ and the love He showed us.

Ephesians 5:1-2 – 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Continue reading
