Meeting God Face-To-Face

Exodus 33:22

When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

I personally met several ball players over the years. I’ll name a few – and some of our younger readers might not know some of them – Johnny Unitas – Jim Palmer – Boog Powell – Eddie Murray (I remember him standing in the rain to give me an autograph) – Brooks Robinson – Harmon Killebrew – Frank Howard – Raymond Berry – Frank Robinson – Wes Unseld – Earl Monroe – Paul Blair – Don Buford – Al Bumbry – Justin Tucker – Matt Stover – and others. I once refereed a basketball game at old Andover High School where the visiting team was made up of Oriole ball players and others. I remember giving a technical foul before the game began – to Al Bumbry – for dunking in warmups – yes – I was a sticker for the rules back in the day.

Have you ever met someone that put you into awe mode? Maybe – with how close we are to Washington – you have met some politicians – like Presidents or others. Maybe – some of my friends who work with FCA have met some current players. I know I attended a dinner recently and met Coach Harbaugh along with some players. Continue reading

Using Our Blessings to Glorify God

Luke 12:48b

48bFrom everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Life ChangeWhen I was playing High School football – we often heard this phrase from our coach – Big Al Laramore (from Annapolis High School) – from everyone who has been given much – much will be demanded. I’m not sure our coach knew it was from the Bible – he was a man of faith – but he reminded us and demanded it of us none-the-less!

Pro players have been given much – talent as well as a platform and money. Three baseball players just signed for 300 to 430 million this off-season (all record deals). I wonder if they will use their platforms for Christ’s glory? Players like Chris Davis for the Orioles and Ray Lewis (Hall of Fame) with the Ravens try to give back to the community and to share their faith as well. I went to a recent FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) banquet and met Coach John Harbaugh and former player – placekicker Matt Stover. They have used their position and platform to spread Christ. They have been given much – and they use it to God’s glory. Continue reading

Labor As Unto The Lord!

Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

RayMcDToday is Labor Day – the day we celebrate the labor force in America – by giving most everyone the day off. As we look around our congregation – we can see the numerous harvest fields God has given us – even within the confines of our own members.

How many of our readers have been to sporting events? FedEx Field? Camden Yards? If we have attended sporting events – especially professional sports – I assume we have also seen players praying on the field – or motioning toward heaven after making a play.  Some Christians – like the Raven’s Matt Stover – point toward heaven – toward God – whether he makes the right play or not – giving God credit for all he does and for the talent to compete at such a high level (he is the best kicker in the NFL IMHO).
