There Are Essential Doctrines

Matthew 4:10

Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”

photo on 6-11-19 at 10.52 amWe’ve been digging into the Book of Acts in Bible Study and the Apostles’ Creed in worship. These studies and sermons are dealing with a number of basic beliefs and doctrines of the church. It is a good review of the basics for those of us more mature in the faith while it will be a basic lesson plan for new believers. Not too long ago we had 31 people accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. I pray that at the end of the Apostles’ Creed study – more will receive Jesus too.

In the current sermon series we are dealing essential doctrines like understanding God the Father – God the Son – and God the Holy Spirit. We are dealing with the Virgin Birth – the death of Christ – His resurrection – eternity (eternal life) – the holy catholic church – and more. This series began in August and will run thru October. If you live in the area – join us! If not – listen online when the messages are uploaded to our website – www.fumcl.org.

Before we read today’s passage – here is a truth we must all understand – Satan is real! Satan is out to steal our joy and our peace. If possible – Satan is out to steal our walk with Jesus. Today’s passage is from the story about Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness. Temptations are real and every day – even constant. We can find today’s story in Matthew chapter 4.  Here is a wider view of today’s passage. Continue reading

Satan’s Temptations – What Tempts Us?

Matthew 4:10

Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ “

Temptations come and go – and at times they get the best of us. Think for a moment – what temps you? If you’re like me – over-weight – certain foods or food in general might tempt you. I have a hard time passing up pizza or ice cream to name some food. And a Snickers bar is hard for me to turn down as well. Hot apple pie with a scoop of ice cream – now I’m just making my mouth water. What tempts us? What does Satan use to tempt us?

Along with my food temptations (and food isn’t the only thing that tempts me) – I have a hard time turning down free or all-you-can-eat food. I try to avoid places that serve a buffet – and mixture of items that you can eat as much as you want. I remember eating an ice cream sundae meant to serve several people by myself because it was free if I ate it all (seminary days). Continue reading

Satan Is Real and Will Try To Defeat Us

Matthew 4:10

Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”

RayMcDIn another week we will begin a new sermon series titled New Believers. It will include a number of basic beliefs and doctrines of the church. It will be a good review of the basics for those of us more mature in the faith while it will be a basic lesson plan for new believers. Recently we had 31 people accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and I thought a basic plan was needed.

In the series we will cover such topics as Temptations Still Strike, Hypocrisy Impacts All, The World Embroils, False Claims – Prosperity, and The Whole Gospel. The series will begin on February 12th and run through March 12th. If you live in the area – join us! If not – listen online when the messages are uploaded to our website – www.fumcl.org.

Satan Will Tempt You – He Tempted Jesus – But Stand Strong in Christ!

Matthew 4:10

Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ “

Starting this Sunday – October 10 (it will be 10/10/10 by the way) – we will begin a sermon series titled – What Is Biblical Worship.  Yesterday we took a quick look at the Commandment to have no other gods before me. This Commandment reveals God’s desire to be the only god in our life – the only One that we worship.

Today’s passage is from the story about Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness.  You can find the story in Matthew chapter 4.  Here is a wider view of today’s passage.

Matthew 4:1-10 – 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'”

Satan tried to tempt Jesus with things he thought would be areas of weakness for Jesus.  Satan tried to tempt Jesus with His claim to be God – with the ability to change the elements.  Satan tempted Jesus with a promise from His Father – and His claim that He was the Son of God.  Satan tempted Jesus with power and glory.  Each time Jesus turned Satan aside with Scripture – with the Word of God.

Where does Satan tempt you?  Do you stand strong – most of the time?  Do you know the promises of God found in His Word – so you too can rebuke Satan’s temptations?  No temptation can come your way that God will not give you victory over – if you seek it!

1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
