November Fast – Week Four

Matthew 4:1-2

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

profileWell – here we are at week four. So far I have tried to fast from snacks and candies during week one.  During week two I tried fasted from fast foods.  That wasn’t easy as I travel a lot and often during meal time.  During week three I tried to fast from negative people and negative situations.  That wasn’t as easy as it sounded when I typed it a week ago.

During those three weeks I have tried to spend more time before the Lord in prayer and devotion.  It has been a time of reflection and growth.  I have discerned a number of things in my life that need to change during this past week. Without revealing them – let me simply say that God has had more access to my heart and mind these past three weeks than most any time I can remember.

November Fast – Week Three

Matthew 4:1-2

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

profileOK – this fasting stuff is starting to get on my nerves.  Not the spending more time with Jesus part (loving that part) – but the fasting from stuff part.  The first week I fasted from snacks and candies.  As the week progressed I slipped once with some potato chips at a church luncheon (put them on my plate without even thinking about it – ugh).  The second week I added fast foods to my list while trying to continue with the snacks and candies fast.  At another church dinner (do you see a pattern here) I had a dessert and someone said something to me.  I mean – desserts are not snacks or candies right – but they thought I said I was fasting from sweets (which I did not say).  When you broadcast your fast there are eyes everywhere!! November Fast – Week Two

Matthew 4:1-2

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

profileHere we are – day one of week two – of the November Fast.  I can’t say I’m hungry because I didn’t fast like Jesus did – but I did have a desire for a Snicker’s bar this past week – my candy of choice.  I slipped up – like I reported on my blog page here – and had a couple of chips at a church meal before I remembered.  But for the week I stayed away from snacks and candies.

Now week two is upon us.  I have decided to fast from fast food during week two.  Fast food is another of my weaknesses.  I mean – you can get a double hamburger for a buck!  And it is quick – in and out and you’re on your way with lunch or a late night snack.  The trouble is a double hamburger at this one place is 390 calories and not all good calories at that. He Was Hungry

Matthew 4:1-2

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

RayBlogI remember as a child running in from outside playing and telling my mom I was starved. Of course I received the typical parent’s response – you’re not starving – you’re just hungry. Of course I wasn’t starving – I was merely – ever so slightly mind you – hungry. It might have been a few hours – even several hours – since my last meal and I had been playing and was running low on fuel.

This past year I visited Haiti on a mission trip. It wasn’t the first time I had seen starving people – having taken several mission trips to Appalachia – but it reminded me of the times I told my mom I was starving. It made me feel bad for ever thinking I was starving.
