What Are We Feeding Our Spiritual Bodies?

John 6:35

Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

RayMcDSix guys from our church have joined together to lose weight. We support one another. We text and e-mail one another. We weigh in on Sunday mornings at church. It is working. As of our last weigh in the six of us have lost a combined 69 pounds. One brother has lost 17 pounds. Two others are in double digits. And reports from home scales indicate we will have a new combined total this Sunday – well into 70+ pounds.

We set goals of losing 5% of our body weight by Labor Day (we began on July 15th). We have additional goals of 8% by Thanksgiving and 10% by Christmas (for a man weighing 280 pounds that would be a 28 pound lose by Christmas). Two brothers have already met their 5% goals – and another is very close – they are working toward their 8% goal already with a couple of weeks to go on Labor Day. We may need to adjust the goals. Do We Hunger and Thirst After Right Living?

Matthew 5:6

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Sunday – we talked about being ready for Christ’s return. The sermon was titled That Day and Hour – and we were reminded that Christ will return for us. We also talked about being ready for His return. I mentioned that Christ would return in one of two ways for us – either He would be there for us when we drew our last breath or He would return to receive His church at the rapture.

We mentioned a number of things we could do to be ready for Jesus’ return. Of course – number one was receiving Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Without Jesus – we would be hopelessly lost for eternity.

We named a few other things we could do as well. We didn’t mean to give a list of all of the things we could do to be prepared for Christ’s return – but – we mentioned a few things. Among those things we listed was today’s passage. Continue reading

What Do We Thirst For Each Day?

John 4:13-14

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

RayMcDI’m one of those people that just can’t seem to get enough to drink. As a youth I could put away several gallons of sweet tea a day – especially in the summer. I seem to have an unquenchable thirst. I need lots of fluids each day!

I don’t drink coffee – never have gained a taste for it. My current favorite drinks are diet Pepsi (which my wife is still trying to get me to drop) – diet Snapple half and half (tea & lemonade) – and Sparkling ICE (especially the Coconut Pineapple & Pink Grapefruit). I also use Kool-Aid water enhancer (Cherry is my favorite) because I need taste with my drinks. I like hot chocolate too. Straight water – although great for me – just doesn’t cut it. I need to taste something in my drink.

Bottom-line – I thirst and need lots of fluids each day. I would not do well in a region where there was little to drink. In today’s passage – I would have gone to the well several times a day to get enough water to quench my thirst. Continue reading

My Soul Thirsts For God

Psalm 42:2

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

112015 Ray McDonaldHave you ever thirsted for something? I’ve fasted from things during Lent before and for other reasons. I have thirsted or hungered for them. When we do without something for a period of time and we desire that something – we hunger or thirst for it.

Were you ready for the current baseball season to start? In a way – did you thirst for some baseball? I know some people who are already counting down the days until College Football or the NFL returns. What about thirsting for a Stanley Cup in DC?

If married – is there a yearning for your spouse when you are away for some time? I have a hard time being away from my spouse for even a day (we both work outside the home and the time a part is not fun). Some day – when we both retire – we might get tired of being around each other so much – but until then – I will continue to thirst for her company during the day! I text her several times a day to let her know I miss her. Continue reading
