My Memory – God’s Grace

Psalm 103:11-12

as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

My memory is not the best. For instance – I forgot to put out today’s devotional. Before I hear a rousing chorus of amens from the peanut gallery about my memory – let me explain. I’m not sure if it is age – my Tourette Syndrome – my A.D.D. – a male thing – early Alzheimer’s disease or dementia – or simply who I am. I can leave my office and walk to Cathy’s desk and forget why I was going there. I can even at times get into my car and forget where I was headed. It’s my issue – among others – but today it reminded me of God’s grace.

You might ask how I got from my short term memory loss to God’s grace? Well – I’m going to tell you. Continue reading

Hide God’s Word in Our Hearts

Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

82015 RayHave you ever played memory games? I remember playing Concentration – I enjoyed that game. I also remember playing other type games that were considered brain games – like finding the hidden pictures in Highlight magazine or finding what was different about two pictures.

Do you remember when we use to memorize dozens of phone numbers? This was before cell phones where we simply name the person and the phone calls them. I could rattle off dozens and dozens of numbers.

Did you ever memorize Scripture? I had a friend that memorized the whole book of James. Continue reading

God’s Love Endures Forever

Psalm 118:1

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

20140530-104833-38913743.jpgMy beloved mom is 86 and is dealing with a disease that impacts her memory. When she visits with us – I spend a lot of the time trying to trigger her memory. We talk about current things – her short-term memory is the worst – like what she had for breakfast. We also talk about things from way back! She had a nickname and with some prodding – she usually remembers it. With some help at times – and other times without help – she remembers her children’s names and their spouses’ names too. Today she even remembered the names of my three daughters.

It is sad at times – we don’t have our mom with us – at least not the mom we grew up with for sure – but it is also a good thing – she doesn’t dwell on dad not being here and lives life moment-by-moment. Some of us should do that!

Memory is a good thing – most of the time. In the Bible – Israel seemed to have short memories. They would be forgiven by God (for some sin) – they would be blessed by God – often in a way that would blow their minds – and in short order – they would seemingly forget about God and go astray. Sound familiar? I believe we are like this today as well. Think about it. Continue reading
