The Only Constant Is Change

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Life keeps changing! The only constant in life is change. A number of things in my own life have changed. I’ve been married longer than I wasn’t married (37 years this past summer verses 25 years not married). I celebrated 44 years since I graduated High School this past June. I saw a picture of me in High School the other day and I do not look the same today!

My children – my babies – are all grown. Two have children (my five granddaughters). My wife and daughters are such a blessing to me along with our granddaughters. I’ve been in ministry for 41 years. I’ve begun to think about retirement (although I hope to have a few more years left – maybe more!).

Life keeps changing! This summer the Nationals have played playoff bound baseball – the Orioles are trying to get in but it doesn’t seem to be a certainty for sure. The Redskins lost their season opening game while the Ravens won – shutting out the Bengals. The Wizards made the playoffs and so did the Capitals. That’s pretty good change for our area and Maryland is 2-0 after two convincing wins.

August 4 – Baseball Season – 2 Months Left

1 Corinthians 9:24

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

OK – lots of posts on this blog are about significant theological issues. We have written about the United Methodist Church’s policies and doctrines. We have talk about church drama and operation. We have written about grace – peace – assurance – salvation – sin – Jesus – conviction – repentance – and more.

Today I want to focus just a few thoughts on this baseball season. As today’s passage suggests – athletes will strive to achieve the victory in their sport. In order to do so – they must practice – workout – and strive every day for their goal.

Recently I met two coaches from the Orioles and had a chance to talk with them about this season. The team will not give up and they have most recently (not counting last night because this was written before the game) won 5 straight and gotten within 3 games of the playoffs and 5 games from the division lead. Keep Watch With Me!

Matthew 26:38

Then he said to them, My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.

RayMcDThe Cubs won the World Series in baseball. It has been a long time since that was last typed. This ended a 108-year drought – a period longer than any other Major League Baseball team.

There are Cub fans that haven’t experienced a winning season very often much less winning the title. Yet many Cub fans are diehard fans – win or lose (and they often lost) – they supported their team. Around here the Orioles went 14 seasons without having a winning season and many fans departed and haven’t come back – even though they have started to win again and have been to the playoffs recently. The Nationals have been favorites before the season a few times to win the World Series (on paper) and when they didn’t achieve those lofty goals – some fans departed. Let’s not get started on the Redskins or the Ravens around here or Maryland Football/Basketball.

At times – things won’t go our way. At times – things will actually go wrong. How will we deal with the tough times? Will we stay strong – win or lose? Will we follow the cause – no matter what happens? Will we run the race and fight the fight? Will we stay the course? Continue reading

A Time For Everything

Ecclesiastes 3:1

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

RayMcDSaturday night we went to bed with the temperature at 72. We had turned off the AC early that evening in the hopes that fall weather would arrive. I hadn’t slept well the night before – my Fitbit said I got less than 4 hours of sleep – and I really needed some sleep. I slept soundly from a little before 10 pm till just after 6 am – over 8 hours of sleep! It was time for a good sleep!

Sunday morning I woke to 50 degrees at the house (windows open so covers were on). It was time for some cooler weather.

Sunday we tried doing a Facebook live event for the sermon. It wasn’t one of our better sermons but I wanted to try the live event feature. You can listen to the sermon here if you have Facebook. It was time to try something new. Continue reading

Think About Such Things – Things That Matter

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

IMG_0435-0What do we spend our time thinking about these days? As a sports nut – I’ve been thinking about the Orioles and the Nationals – both are in first place. As I write this post – the NBA game 7 of the finals is just a few hours away. The U.S. Open is nearing the end of their championship! These things matter little in the scope of things – but my focus has been on them some today.

If you’re not a fan of sports – as I read my Facebook feed – I noticed some have been focused all day with family – specifically with their fathers – now there is something that matters – but it might still be less than an eternal endeavor. Some have been trying to figure out their pets – how to get them to obey them – a worthy cause – but less than eternal as well. Some have gone out to dinner – one of my daughters FaceTimed me heading to dinner – another worthy effort – but not of eternal value. And so on goes our list… Continue reading
