Jesus – The Way, Truth, and Life

John 14:6

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

112015 Ray McDonaldOnce in awhile I will write articles about basic Christian beliefs – beliefs that I believe are essential to the faith – essential to be called a Christian.  So basic that I would have a hard time having any meaningful relationship with a pastor or church that didn’t believe them.  There are many denominations that call themselves Christian in the world today – and some are teaching a form of Christianity that is not only not orthodox – but not grounded in the basics of Christianity.

If I were asked for the most basic of beliefs – one of the first ones I would mention is that salvation is through Christ and Christ alone.  There is no other means of grace – no other way to approach the Father – to enter heaven.  Here are two Scriptures that I believe support this belief.

Jesus was preparing the Disciples for His death – His crucifixion – and was trying to explain to them what was going to happen.  Thomas – one of the Disciples asked Jesus the following question.

John 14:5 – “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

John 14:6 – Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Continue reading

Wrestling With Sin

Romans 7:19

For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.

profileI have a sermon series developing within my head – about wrestling with sin.  I told my congregation I was working on it and might come dressed as Hulk Hogan when I preach it.  After trying to apologize for the image that might have brought to some – I mentioned that I was serious about the sermon series.

In our Tuesday morning co-ed Bible class and in our Tuesday evening Men’s Bible class – I have been talking about wrestling with sin.  It is my premise that many Christians today do little wrestling with sin.  This is not because we are so sanctified – but because we have allowed the culture to creep into our lives and churches and sin has lost its place in our lives or understanding.  Some church and pastors I know speak very little about sin or confession and repentance.  Some have even given up on a belief in hell and damnation – believing instead in some form of universalism – where we all go to heaven. The Strong Tower

Proverbs 18:10

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.

profileOK – here we go again – Christmas is almost here.  Just a few more days to go.  Have you finished your shopping?  I found something for my wife today – and I hope she likes it!  She does such a wonderful job with the Christmas shopping – all I need to do it get her something!

Yesterday some things happened in the news that got some people riled up and many of them aired their thoughts on Facebook.  My news feed was filled with posts and comments about two news items in particular.  It was amusing at times to read them and at times it was sad. Continue reading
