Let Our Words Encourage

Ephesians 4:29

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

I know we all have heard the old saying – sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never harm me. The intent was to toughen us up so to speak – so the words of others will not hurt us.

Unfortunately – words do hurt. The parent who says to the child who has brought home an amazing report card only to hear the parent say – if you would only bring this grade or that grade up. The parent or coach that is constantly belittling the player for the mistakes they make on the field or in life without ever praising the good the player or person does.

In this day and age – even in the church – we need to be reminded to be kind with our words. Our words should be an encouragement to others. We should say nothing unwholesome and nothing with a purpose of hurting another person. Continue reading

Troubles Will Come Our Way

Psalm 71:20

Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.

We try to pray together and talk through the troubles. We try to identify the trouble and root out the issues. At times – marriages are healed.

Trouble – we all have trouble in our lives – at least from time to time. Troubles will come our way. Some folks come to my office with financial troubles. Some have lost their jobs – or cannot seem to find a job. Some have troubles keeping up with the bills in their lives. We pray together – we talk together – we try to help people back on their feet.

Trouble – we all have trouble in our lives – at least from time to time. Troubles will come our way. Some folks come into my office with troubles with their children. Not the typical parent/child troubles that most all of us have faced – but troubles with drugs – alcohol – crime – abuse. We pray together and we talk together and together we try to help these folks through their troubles. Continue reading

Too Often I Have Been the Fool

Proverbs 12:15

The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.

profileI’m 58 and pretty much enjoying life.  I arose this morning at 5 am and felt refreshed and ready for the day.  No new aches or pains – just the ones I’ve been dealing with for a few years now.  Yesterday I walked the 5K course we have set for the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day at First UMC in Laurel – to support LARS (the Laurel Advocacy & Referral Service) and have recovered nicely from it thank you (lol).  My three daughters have grown into lovely women who love God and their parents (I know how rare that is for sure).  My wife of 33 years is more beautiful today (inside and out) than the day I first met her (talk about rare).  I know I don’t deserve her of them (daughters) or much of what I enjoy today.  I could go on and on – but you don’t read these devotional thoughts for me to talk about my family – or do you?
