For Such a Time As This!

Esther 4:14

For such a time as this!

Life ChangeFor such a time as this! In just 24 days – the Special General Conference of the United Methodist Church will begin. You can read about it here. You can also read some articles and watch some videos here. This could be a pivotal General Conference in the life of our church. Will we remain a united church or will there be a division within the ranks of the church? There are three main plans being proposed. Again – you can read about there here. For such a time as this – we are facing a trying time.

For such a time as this! The Super Bowl is coming this Sunday. Once again – the New England Patriots are in the game. Will Tom Brady and Bill Belichick win yet again? Or will the L.A. Rams win this one? A number of members from our church are Patriot fans. I don’t know of any Rams fans. I know a number of people who will not be watching. Continue reading

God Has A Plan For Us

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

OK – I must admit it – I’m writing this devotion during the halftime of this year’s Super Bowl – and into the 3rd quarter. My team isn’t in the game – as a mater of fact – no team I care about is in the Super Bowl. I would love to watch the Ravens or the Redskins – but that didn’t happen this year. I might enjoy watching some other teams – but the Eagles and the Patriots just doesn’t interest me much. Carol – a member of our church is a diehard Patriot’s fan and Bev – also from the church – is the same for the Eagles – so I watch for them (LOL).

I thought about not watching the game. I haven’t watch many games this year. But it is the Super Bowl and they have great commercials. My wife is a big football fan so we watch together (1st half and the rest of the second half once I put this devotional to bed.

If I had to say who I was pulling for – and of course the game will be over before this devotional comes out – I would say I’m pulling for the Eagles – if pushed to make a decision. I think Tom Brady is the best quarterback of his era. I also think that the Patriots have won enough – let others feel the thrill. Continue reading

The Cost of Following Jesus

Matthew 7:24-25

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

82015 RayHave you ever seen news reports about people caught in mudslides?  Some people – having built their homes on the side of hills – without firm foundations – can have their homes washed away in storms.  I’ve seen devastation like this for people who build their homes on sandbars in Florida or in the Mississippi Delta.  Storms rear up and at times – home are washed away.  I’m sure many of these home owners thought they had taken every precaution.

Many of us think we are taking every precaution in our faith journey.  We try to do good on every occasion – or at least often.  We try to attend worship – most Sundays – or at least more often than some.  We strive to walk by the Ten Commandments – when they don’t get in the way of our enjoyment of life.

The truth be told – some of us are playing at being Christians – we want the benefit of being a child of God – namely NO HELL – but we aren’t sold out for Jesus.  We’re sold out for the Ravens or the Steelers (or the Jets or Patriots or Redskins).  We’re sold out for our favorite baseball team.  We’re even sold out for work – home – family – hobbies – and more.  But being sold out for Jesus – well – let’s get serious.

God Has a Plan!

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

IMG_0301OK – I admit it – I’m writing this devotion during the halftime of the Super Bowl – and into the 3rd quarter. My team isn’t in the game – as a mater of fact – not team I care about is in the Super Bowl. If not the Ravens or the Redskins – I would be excited to watch Peyton Manning and the Broncos – Andrew Luck and the Colts – or Aaron Rogers and the Packers. Maybe I would watch a few other teams – but the Seahawks and the Patriots – not a game I care to watch – although I have watched the first half and will probably keep an eye on the game – it is the Super Bowl after all.

If I had to say who I was pulling for – and of course the game will be over before this devotional comes out – I would say I’m pulling for the Seahawks – if pushed to make a decision. Deflategate and other such happenings turned me against the Patriots – along with the team arrogance.

Both teams – I assume – have come in with a game plan. They have players ready to make key plays – and a game plan to try and defeat the other team. The Seahawks are trying to run the ball and throw enough big plays to keep the defense honest so they can run the ball. The Patriots are trying to put the ball in their quarterback’s hand and allowing this future Hall of Famer to do what he does best. By the way – the 3rd quarter just started – the TV in my office is on but I am listening to my James Taylor channel on Pandora with the sound off on the TV (I turn up the sound when the commercials come on).
