Following Jesus and Jesus Alone

John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Photo on 9-10-18 at 11.09 AMHave any of us ever wished we could tell the future? Are any of us the type of person who would like to know what is coming next? I mean – if we could know the day and time of something in our life – would we appreciate that knowledge or would it freak us out?

What if we could know when we were going to die? What if we could know what will happen next week in our life? What if we had an idea about how we would be treated because of whom we followed?

Dear Christian readers – listen to God when God says – the world will hate us because we follow Him. Jesus tried to warn His disciples – His followers – about what was coming – about the hate that we would face in the world we live in today. In the midst of some of His warnings – we find today’s passage –“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Continue reading

God Wants to Be Our Refuge

Deuteronomy 33:27

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.

Ray 2018I took a count tonight on the number of posts I have put on my current blog page. I have been posting on WordPress since 2010. I first started writing on www.raymcd.blogspot.com (my last post there was in February of 2010). At www.raymcdonald.wordpress.com – I have posted 2,845 devotional thoughts – not counting today’s post. I might just put them together in retirement and make a devotional book. What do you think?

I once posted about Social Media and the Tongue and many read it and liked it. I posted once about the 2016 Presidential Elections – and it too was widely read. I wrote one on God’s grace and another on God being our refuge. My prediction – when I posted them – was that the last two would get very little notice while the former two would get lots of traffic. Do you wonder why that is? Continue reading

Living at Peace with Everyone

Hebrews 12:14

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy…

RayMcDI know some families have issues during football season. Some couples I know root for opposing teams – like one will root for the Ravens while the other will root for the Steelers – or one will root for the Redskins while the other will root for the Cowboys. Football season is very interesting in those homes – especially when they play each other. Add to this the football widow or widower – where one spouse loves football and the other cannot stand it and you have tension in the home.

Last night in Bible study one of the brothers mentioned his wife’s support of the Capitals and his support for the Penguins and how there is usually tension in the home during hockey season – especially then they play each other. At least – he said – the Stanley Cup was in their home the last three years (2 for the Penguins and 1 for the Capitals)! Continue reading

We Live In Troubling Times

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

We live in troubling times. North Korea is a nuclear threat. There is unrest – once again – with Russia. China is also a super power threat. Not to mention the unrest in Iran – Iraq – Afghanistan – Nigeria – Syria – Pakistan – Yemen and Somalia. World peace seems only a dream for the uninformed.

We live in troubling times. I personally know of several married couples that have given up or are on the verge of giving up. Some are recently married and some have been married for some time. Some of the couples have children – even young children. Even some of the married couples I know who might not be in trouble – have troubles. It seems like happily ever after is just a pipe dream in many cases. The peace that some seek in a lifetime commitment is not experienced by many. Continue reading

All Saint’s Day 2017

Psalm 116:15

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

Early this morning I was watching the news. The news is very rarely good. Today they were reliving the terror attack in New York yesterday. When will we protect our boarders and keep such radicals out of our country? I know that is not an easy subject – but we need to do something to keep our shores safe – if that is possible in this day and age. I don’t mean to be political – but something needs to be done!

Later today I will help to celebrate the life of a lifetime friend – Doris. She was a special lady for sure. One I fondly remember from my days as a child and later as a pastor – serving the church where she attended. I have many memories of Doris. Most of them are good! I will share some of them today at her service of celebration. I especially remember how she loved her Jesus!

All Saint’s Day of late – always reminds me – of my dear departed father and now my mother. They loved Jesus with all their hearts. They knew and experienced God and they now rest in peace with Jesus. I have confidence in this fact – it is part of my faith – part of my walk with Jesus. Do we know Jesus? Is Jesus our personal Lord and Savior? Do we have a personal relationship with Jesus? All of these are good questions. What are our answers? Continue reading
