Attitude: In General

Proverbs 17:22

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

RayMcDAs we begin a New Year – I felt the need to do a series of blog posts about attitude. I believe we can have all the right programs in a church. We can have friendly faces on Sunday mornings. We can have just the right amount of staff and volunteers. We can have a great facility that is attractive – warm – and welcoming. But I believe if our attitudes are not right – our attitudes will seep through all of the other areas of ministry and eventually they will be seen and will corrupt all that we try to do. We all need to constantly check our attitudes. I’m not sure how long this series will go – but I felt led of God to share it.

You would think that – in the church – good attitudes would abound – maybe even be the rule rather than the exception. Yet in church life – real people are involved and real people have attitudes at times. I’ve spent a lot of time over the years talking about our attitude as Christians. I created a saying some 30 plus years ago that goes like this – Christianity boils down to attitude. Over the year I’ve added a follow-up statement and the saying now reads – Christianity boils down to attitude – the condition and position of one’s heart. God is after our hearts – God desires a cheerful heart – a heart set on Christ. Let’s look at some passages that speak about the heart. Continue reading

Christ Is After The Heart (The Attitude)

Proverbs 17:22

RayMcDI’ve spent a lot of time over the years talking about our attitude as Christians. I created a saying some 30 plus years ago that goes like this – Christianity boils down to attitude. Let’s look at some passages that speak about the heart.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Proverbs 23:26 – My son, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Proverbs 4:23 – Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Christ is after the heart (the attitude). Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Continue reading

21-Day Prayer/Fast – Day 4

Psalm 119:2

Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.

01032015 RayPsalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible (a trivia question for sure).  Psalm 119 is the reading for today and you can read it here.  It is the Bible that gives us instruction and teaching about the statues of God – about the character of God.  2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God‑breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.  It is a love for the Word of God that should be in our hearts.  This love for God’s Word should shape our attitudes.  A deep desire to know more of God by knowing more of His Word.

Having a heart for God and for God’s Word is essential.  I will pray this for us during this prayer/fast – that we develop or grow our heart for God’s Word.  I pray for us to always have a heart for God and for His Word!  Search us Lord and know our hearts!  Deepen our love for You and for Your Word. Passion for God’s Word – Day 4 of 21 Prayer/Fast

Psalm 119:2

Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.

RamonBlogPsalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible.  Psalm 119 is the reading for today and you can read it here.  It is the Bible that gives us instruction – teaching – about the statues of God.  2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God‑breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.  It is a love for the Word of God that should be in our hearts.

Having a heart for God and for God’s Word is essential.  I pray this for us during this prayer/fast.  I pray for us to always have a heart for God and for His Word!

The Scriptures are filled with challenges to have a heart for God.  Proverbs 23:26 – My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways. If we love God – we will seek His face and desire His grace.  John 14:23 – Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”  Seeking after God with our whole heart is what God desires from us.  Jeremiah 29:13 – You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Today is a short devotional thought – partly because the reading for the day is so long – Psalm 119:1-176.  Today’s message is simple and straight forward.  We need a heart for Jesus!  We need to develop a heart after the Word of God!  We need to grow a passion for the Word of God and for the heart of God.  I for one desire to be more and more in love with Jesus every day!

Late Addition:  If we do not look to the Word of God for truth – where will we turn – to our minds – to our reason? We’ve been warned about this in the very Word of God!  2 Timothy 4:3-4 – 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
