Immigration and Love

Psalm 91:2

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

photo on 6-11-19 at 10.52 amWell – I will be away from the blog page for about a week. I hope you miss me – or at least the week day devotional thoughts. I will have a lot to share when I return. Catching up on some reading – some podcasts and some golf (oh – and time with family).

In today’s political climate – and on the Elder’s page I frequent on Facebook – one of the debate subjects is over the current immigration process on our southern border. Some are horrified over children being detained separate from those presenting themselves to be their parents (in other words – not all presenting themselves as their parents are really their parents). It has been documented that some are simply bringing children with them to try and get past the border and some are bringing children north for slavery and sex trafficking too. It is a horrific situation. There are also real families seeking asylum – and we need to treat them with honor and respect.

Of course – the policy in place at this time is from previous administrations and needs to be changed – but until it is changed – this administration is trying to enforce the current laws. Some state administrations have ignored the laws altogether. Sounds like the United Methodist Church where some disagree with the laws of the church yet ignore the law.

Some are appalled at children being taken from their parents by this administration – yet didn’t say a word when it was being done by the previous administrations. I’m really trying to not be political. Yet – it seems like you can’t turn on the TV or read social media without someone getting political these days. Continue reading

God Is Our Refuge – In Him We Trust

Psalm 91:2

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Well – I’m back. I hope you missed me – or at least the week day devotional thoughts. Leave a comment on today’s devotional thought if you missed our devotional thoughts last week. My staycation was OK – although it is never as good as a vacation where you get away. I did accomplish 21 of 29 honey dos on my list. It was a successful week in that regard. I also got to play two rounds of golf – although I am still recovering from rotator cuff surgery and not yet playing up to par (no pun intended).

In today’s political climate – and on the Elder’s page I frequent on Facebook – the debate is over the current immigration process on our southern border. Some are horrified over children being detained separate from those presenting themselves to be there parents – who are trying to enter our country illegally. I say presenting themselves as parents of the children because it has been documented that some are simply bringing children with them to try and get past the border and some are bringing children north for slavery and sex trafficking.

Of course – the policy in place at this time is from previous administrations and needs to be changed – but until it is changed – this administration is trying to enforce the current laws. God is Our Refuge and Our Fortress

Psalm 91:2

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Sunday we challenged the church to keep their eyes on Jesus!  No matter what storm might come their way.  Peter did and he walked on water.  He took his eyes off of Jesus and put them on the storm and he began to sink and cried out to Jesus to save him.  Here is a portion of that story.

Matthew 14:25-31 – 25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

The Psalmist knew that God was his refuge and his strength.  Hew knew if he just kept his eyes on God he would be OK.  He wrote – I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  God is our stronghold – a mighty fortress in times of trouble.  He is One we can turn to for strength in all of life’s circumstances.  If we are facing issues in our marriage – God can be our strength.  If we are facing hard economic times – God can be our strength.  If we are facing an unexpected pregnancy – God can be our strength.  If we are facing peer pressure – God can be our strength.  If we are having trouble with our parents or with our children – God can be our strength.  If we have had a diagnosis of cancer or some other terrible illness – God can be our strength.

Can you say today – that God is your refuge and your fortress?  You can if you keep your eyes on Jesus!  We can walk on water – in other words do what some thing impossible.

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.

God is Our Refuge

Psalm 91:2

2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

When you are having a tough day – to whom do you turn or to what do you turn?  Some turn to their spouse.  Some turn to food.  Some turn to a good friend.  Some turn to a professional.  Some turn to themselves.

I would suggest that when we have trouble – we should turn to our Lord.  The Psalmist knew this and writes – He is my refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust”. Maybe if we turned to our Lord – even before we faced trouble – but surely when we face trouble – we might be stronger and better able to face the day ahead of us.

Where do you turn when trouble comes?  Won’t you consider turning toward the Lord?  Our refuge and our fortress!

Just something to think about today as you go on your way.
