God’s Love

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

profileWhen Shelly – our oldest – was born – I believe if I had been put in the situation – I would have given my life in exchange for hers (thank God I was never in that situation).  I would do the same for my wife and all three of my daughters I believe (we never know what we might do – really – until we are actually faced with situations).

If you expanded that circle I might include a few family members and even a few close friends – but the circle wouldn’t be too wide.  What would you be willing to do for a friend?  Would your circle be wide or small? Continue reading

November Fast – Week Four

Matthew 4:1-2

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

profileWell – here we are at week four. So far I have tried to fast from snacks and candies during week one.  During week two I tried fasted from fast foods.  That wasn’t easy as I travel a lot and often during meal time.  During week three I tried to fast from negative people and negative situations.  That wasn’t as easy as it sounded when I typed it a week ago.

During those three weeks I have tried to spend more time before the Lord in prayer and devotion.  It has been a time of reflection and growth.  I have discerned a number of things in my life that need to change during this past week. Without revealing them – let me simply say that God has had more access to my heart and mind these past three weeks than most any time I can remember.

November Fast – Week Two

Matthew 4:1-2

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

profileHere we are – day one of week two – of the November Fast.  I can’t say I’m hungry because I didn’t fast like Jesus did – but I did have a desire for a Snicker’s bar this past week – my candy of choice.  I slipped up – like I reported on my blog page here – and had a couple of chips at a church meal before I remembered.  But for the week I stayed away from snacks and candies.

Now week two is upon us.  I have decided to fast from fast food during week two.  Fast food is another of my weaknesses.  I mean – you can get a double hamburger for a buck!  And it is quick – in and out and you’re on your way with lunch or a late night snack.  The trouble is a double hamburger at this one place is 390 calories and not all good calories at that. The Mind Controlled by the Spirit is Life and Peace

Romans 8:6

The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;

profileAs my month of fasting begins (it actually began yesterday) I am challenged to think spiritually rather than with my natural self.  Let’s begin with today’s passage in partial context.  Romans 8:5-8 – 5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Continue reading

Outdoing One Another in Showing Honor

Romans 12:10

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. ESV

profileI remember hearing Pastor Wellington Boone say at a revival some years ago that he would never let his wife out love him.  He was speaking about being a godly man – a godly husband.   He caught my attention.  He was talking about serving his wife and giving her love as Christ gives love.  He said if she gets up early to serve me and have to get up earlier the next morning to serve her.  It wasn’t a competition – yet it was – if that is what motivated him or us.  He said his wife was not his momma.  Maybe his momma served him – but he wasn’t going to let his wife out serve him.
