Satan’s Temptations – What Tempts Us?

Matthew 4:10

Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ “

Temptations come and go – and at times they get the best of us. Think for a moment – what temps you? If you’re like me – over-weight – certain foods or food in general might tempt you. I have a hard time passing up pizza or ice cream to name some food. And a Snickers bar is hard for me to turn down as well. Hot apple pie with a scoop of ice cream – now I’m just making my mouth water. What tempts us? What does Satan use to tempt us?

Along with my food temptations (and food isn’t the only thing that tempts me) – I have a hard time turning down free or all-you-can-eat food. I try to avoid places that serve a buffet – and mixture of items that you can eat as much as you want. I remember eating an ice cream sundae meant to serve several people by myself because it was free if I ate it all (seminary days). Continue reading

Are We Weary and Burdened?

Matthew 11:28

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

112015 Ray McDonaldWhen my oldest granddaughter was four-months-old – she entered a stage where she fought sleep (I’m at the age where I love taking a nap and going to bed at night).  She was the best baby I have ever known (all of my grandchildren are for sure).  She didn’t fuss about much of anything – yet she began to fight going to sleep.  I remember babysitting with her and having a hard time getting her to go down for bedtime.

I remember when I was a child my mom would force me to rest – to take an afternoon nap – after hours of playing and lunch.  I’m not sure it was for my good or hers – lol.  But if I laid on my bed long enough – usually about five minutes – I would be sound asleep.  Even today – if I sit still for five minutes I can doze off.  If I’m not in motion – I will become very docile.  I find myself falling asleep most anywhere.

The body needs rest.  I remember my college and seminary days – sleep was something that I did when I really needed it – or I crashed – because there was so much to do and so little time.  Late night study sessions – mainly because I didn’t keep up in my readings like I should – were commonplace.  All-nighters were just the way I rolled back then.  Up until about a two years ago – 4-6 hours of sleep was all I needed – with a 15-20 minute nap mid-day.  At 61 I am starting to need a little more rest to recoup from the day!  Now I find myself needing 7-8 hours a night – still with the 15-20 minute nap during the day. Have You Ever Felt Alone?

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

profileHave you ever felt alone? I know a number of people who can feel alone in a crowded room. I also know people who feel like they are alone – even though they have a great support team around them. I also know people who feel alone because decisions and life circumstances have left them alone. Each of these situations and others can be a scary situation.

Have you ever felt alone? I remember playing hide-and-seek in a cemetery next door to the parsonage as a child and feeling like I wasn’t alone in the dark in the cemetery. Now that is a scary feeling.

Have you ever felt alone? Have you gone through a tough season in your life – or maybe you’re going through it now – and feel all-alone? Continue reading
