Where Is It That We Struggle Most?

Romans 7:18

For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

Have you ever felt one way and yet ended up going another way? Silly question I guess – since we are all human and most know the right thing to do but have succumbed to the wrong way in our lives. We often know the right way – and yet yield to the wrong way. We fight temptations and evil – but at times we fail in our struggle. We fall short and sin.

Where is it that we struggle the most? For some it is what we put into our bodies that tempt us. That could mean drugs or alcohol or it could mean overeating – all are harmful to us – and we know it – yet some of us continue to abuse our bodies with what we put into them. We try diets – we try to be sober – we try to walk the steps – but – at times – we succumb to what is harmful for us. Continue reading

I Rebuke My Sinful Nature

Romans 7:18

For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

Have you ever felt one way and yet ended up going another way? Silly question I guess – since we are all human and most know the right thing to do but have succumbed to the wrong way. We often know the right way – and yet yield to the wrong way. We fight temptations and evil – but at times we fail in our struggle. I know I have more times than I wish to remember.

Where is it that we struggle the most? For some it is with what we put into our bodies. That could mean drugs and it could mean overeating – both are harmful to us – and we know it – yet some of us continue to abuse our bodies with what we put into them. We try diets – we try to be sober – we try to walk the steps – but – at times – we succumb to what is harmful for us. Again – I have a mirror up as I type this devotional seeing myself! Where is it that we struggle the most? For some it is their behavior. Some of us have trouble with interpersonal relationships. Some have tempers – some use foul language – some have faithfulness issues – some are gossips – and more. We probably know we should do better – and may even desire to do better – but the flesh is weak it seems. Continue reading

Cast Our Cares On Jesus!

Psalm 55:22

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.

82015 RayWhat cares do we have today? The 2016 Presidential election is starting to heat up. Some of the candidates are starting to separate themselves from the others. Who is best to lead our country moving forward? Will we have a 3rd Bush? Will we have a second Clinton – the first female – the first couple – serving as President? Will we have a billionaire President (maybe he would pay some of our national debt with his money)? Will we have the second African American president? Will it be someone young? Will it be someone from the new guard or the old guard? Will it be same-old – same-old – politics as usual or will someone fresh step up? Will they be liberal or conservative? Will they be a capitalist or a socialist or something else? Will they be pro-life or pro-choice? There are many questions.

What cares do we have today? What will the rest of this year and beyond bring for us? I have a close friend who will retire in early 2016. For someone who has been working since his teen years – retiring is a new adventure and one that he has been praying about for some time.

What care do we have today?  I know a number of pastors and lay people who are concerned about General Conference in 2016 and the direction of the United Methodist Church.  Striving to remain orthodox and true to the Scriptures – as we understand them. Continue reading
