Who Is Your Super Hero Today?

John 1:14a

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

I grew up watching Superman. I even play pretend – pretending to be Superman – by placing a towel around my neck and jumping off my bunk bed and flying (till I hit the floor with a thud). The thing that made Superman so special to me was that he wasn’t from this planet. He was from another planet. He was different – not the same old same old!

Superman had exceptional powers. His powers came from our yellow sun (there wasn’t a yellow sun where he lived). He could fly (see the aforementioned leap from the bunk bed) – he was faster than a speeding bullet – he could leap tall buildings with a single bound – he was more powerful than a locomotive – he had x-ray vision – he was bullet proof. All things that endeared him to a young and impressionable child. Whenever my friends played pretend – I would always be Superman because nothing could harm him (except kryptonite – which none of my friends had). Whenever we had pretend battles between super heroes or super villains – Superman always won. My brother liked Batman by the way.

The Super Natural – God Stuff

Psalm 42:8

By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.

Rays HaircutI grew up reading comic books. I had many first editions and full series. I enjoyed the ones where the mild mannered people in day-to-day life turned into super heroes when trouble came their way. One of my favorites growing up was mild mannered Clark Kent becoming Superman. I wouldn’t miss an episode and even today try to catch the old TV show when I can. My brother was a fan of Batman!

I must admit – I don’t watch much TV these days – other than some really old shows – sports and the news (you can guess which news program I watch the most). Some of the shows I tape and try to watch are the ones about super heroes. I like the supernatural! I like it when good overcomes evil.

Today’s passage reminds me of the supernatural presence of God in my life. Psalm 42:8 – By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life. I guess it is just that phrase – by day the Lord. God is always at work in our lives. By day – He is directing His love in us – through us – and in spite of us. And at night – we are singing songs to His glory and presence in our lives. Continue reading

photo on 6-11-19 at 10.52 amI mentioned this before and I mention again – here. I grew up reading comic books. I had many first editions and full series. I enjoyed the ones that were mild mannered people in day-to-day life but when trouble arose – they would become super heroes. One of my favorites was mild mannered Clark Kent becoming Superman. I wouldn’t miss an episode and even today try to catch the old TV show when I can. I enjoyed reading Superman comic books and watching the TV show (1952-1958) (I probably remember the reruns more than the original airings since I was born in 1955 – but maybe some lasting memories from those early years). By the way – my brother was a fan of Batman!

I must admit – I don’t watch much TV these days – other than some really old shows (like The Adventures of Superman and The Andy Griffith Show) – sports and the news (you can guess which news program I watch the most). Some of the shows I tape and try to watch are the ones about super heroes. I like the supernatural! Continue reading

What Is Most Precious To Us?

1 Peter 2:7

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,”

What is most precious to us? Growing up I collected comic books. I had Captain America – Thor – The Avengers – Hulk – Wolverine – Batman – Aqua Man- Superman – Green Hornet – Silver Surfer – Fantastic Four – and more. For some – I had complete original series – in mint condition. I read them all and kept them in a box in the basement of our home. In a sense they were precious to me – precious in the sense that I collected them and kept them.

What is most precious to us? One day my mom had a yard sale. She was selling all sorts of things. I helped for a while and then I had to go umpire a baseball game. I left for a few hours. I went over to the old Elk’s field in Annapolis for the baseball game. When I returned the sale was just about over and I helped bring things into the house. It was later that evening that I found that I was missing my comic collection. My younger brother had taken them out and sold them in the yard sale. I was furious. Something that was precious to me was taken away – without my permission. I hate to think of what they would be worth today. I’m just glad he didn’t find my box of baseball cards – some of them hang in my office now at work! Continue reading
