Thoughts and Reflections

We Are All A Part Of The Whole

1 Corinthians 12:27

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

When I was in school – grade school – Junior & Senior High – I was in the school band. I played trumpet (or in some of our music it was called a cornet). In High School I played in the Orchestra – the Pep Band – the Concert Band and the Marching Band. These bands were a conglomeration of different persons with different talents. When the director got us all on the same page and the same beat – we made some pretty good music. We won awards even for some of our efforts.

The same can be said about the sport teams I played on in High School. A group of different people – working toward a common goal – and we had a measure of success. I’m sure if you’ve been on any team or group – you may have experienced the same.

Churches are like this as well. Churches are made up of a collection of different people trying to make great music together – trying to achieve goals together. Continue reading

Gifting Of The Church

Ephesians 4:11-16

11 It was he (Christ) who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

RayMcDI will begin to breakdown Ephesians 4:11-16 today as we look at the gifting of the church. God has given certain gifts to the church in order that they may be built up for works of service. Be reminded church that the reason we grow up in Christ is to be of service to Him. I guess one place to start would be to define these offices or appointments within the church.

An Apostle according to Easton’s Bible Dictionary is a person sent by another; a messenger; envoy. According to the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia an Apostle is one sent forth; and envoy, missionary. According to Nelson’s Bible Dictionary an Apostle is a special messenger of Jesus Christ; a person to whom Jesus delegated authority for certain tasks. Eleven of the twelve Disciples became known in the church as Apostles as did others like Paul and Jesus’ brother James. Often a task for an Apostle is to be a church planter, a spreader of the truth to the ends of the earth.

Prophet according to McClintock and Strong Encyclopedia is a person who acts as the organ of Divine communication with men (and women), especially with regard to the future. According to New Unger’s Bible Dictionary a Prophet is one who is Divinely inspired to communicate God’s will to His people and to disclose the future to them. According to Nelson’s Bible Dictionary a Prophet is a person who spoke for God and who communicated God’s message courageously. Continue reading

The Heart of a Christian

Philippians 2:5

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

RevRayOne of my favorite sayings goes like this – Christianity boils down to attitude.  I have been known to elaborate on that by saying – Christianity boils down to attitude – the condition and position of your heart.

I want to write a little today about the church and the attitude of Christ.  It (the attitude of Christ) is missing at times in the church.  I know that sounds judgmental – and I don’t mean it to be – but after being in church life my whole life and in ministry for 37 years I can honestly say the attitude of Christ is not always felt by me or others from good church people  or their pastors.  Not that any of us are perfect – but that is what we are striving toward.

Here are a few examples (and feel free to post some additional ones please).  If the purpose of the church is to reach the lost – teach the saved – and turnaround and reach the lost again – why are so many churches dying?  It might just involve our attitudes.  Here is the Great Commission given to us by Jesus – our marching orders – Matthew 28:19-20 – 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Continue reading
