Thoughts and Reflections

Do We Love Jesus More Than Anything?

Matthew 22:37-38

37 Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment.

IMG_0301This is one of my favorite passages.  A pastor on the staff of a church I use to serve – during a sermon – said: the question isn’t the one we typically hear – how much of the Holy Spirit do you have?  The question should be – how much of you have you allowed the Holy Spirit to have?  He also reminded us that the Holy Spirit comes to transform us – to change us – to make us holy.

Today’s passage – as I reflect back on that message – caused me to think – how committed are we to God?  We talk about being saved – but are we only after someone to save us from Hell? Isn’t He also suppose to be our Lord – our Master?  If the Holy Spirit dwells in us through our salvation – what difference are we allowing Him to make in us – in our lives?

I know some Christians who have made radical changes in their lives.  Some have stopped smoking when they came to Christ – some immediately.  Some have cleaned up their language – no longer sounding like sailors.  Some have turned from drug and alcohol addictions.  Some have turned from pornography.  Some have turned from same-sex relations or extra-marital relations.  Some have made radical changes in their lives because of Christ in their lives – because of the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. Run/Ride/Live With Perseverance

Hebrews 12:1-2

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

profileMy wife is getting ready for a 100-mile bike ride.  She has done this ride before.  Between now and the ride she will be in training.  She rides 25-35 miles regularly – but working up to 100 miles takes some effort.  She said she would like to get in a few 35-50 mile rides before the 100-mile ride.  I’m proud of her because when she sets her eyes on a goal – she goes after it with vigor and determination.  Her brother and a good friend will also be riding with her (maybe next year I will try it if I can get my knee fixed and get a road bike instead of a trail bike).

In order to ride such a distance – she not only needs to train – and be diligent about her training (she is headed out as I type this devotional thought) – she needs special clothing – a good bike – shoes that are comfortable – and more.  She is not going after this goal to fail.  She wants to do the whole 100 miles and live to tell about it!
