What Do We Treasure the Most?

Matthew 6:20

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Ray 2019It is getting cold outside. My wood furnace has been fired up a few times this fall already. I have wood stocked up and I’m ready. My wood furnace heats my whole house. I will fire it up again in the morning!

I had a funeral yesterday – and standing outside in the cemetery – people were shivering. I had to get out my heavy overcoat when I saw the temps for the day. My overcoat kept me warm – while others were shivering. I felt bad for them – but – they could have come prepared too. I didn’t keep them out there for long. Some didn’t even have jackets on – it was tough.

Speaking of getting the heavy jackets out – have you ever put on a coat or other piece of clothing that you haven’t worn for some time – only to be surprised what you find in the pockets? I have found money – lifesavers – mints – and other items I was missing – or thought was long gone. Finding money is a great surprise – right?

Don’t you just love when people – searching for something – say things like – it was in the last place I looked. Of course it was – if you kept looking after you found it- we’d have you carted off. Continue reading

What Do We Treasure Or Collect?

Luke 12:34

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

photo on 6-11-19 at 10.52 amOne of my nephews purchased several large crates full of baseball cards. I found him one evening going through them – sorting out teams – Hall of Fame players – and some others groupings. He was in his glory – a sports fan with sports memorabilia. As I was leaving I asked him to find some duplicates of some nice players and sell them to his uncle (that hasn’t happened yet). For those who have been in my office at church – you know I have a display of Hall of Fame players on my wall. I love baseball – the American pastime.

Another thing I enjoy is collecting hats – baseball style hats. I have several from the Orioles – the Ravens – the University of Maryland – the Redskins – the FBI – golf hats of many brands like Titleist – Callaway – SR (the Golf Club at South River) – Twin Shields – Glenn Dale – and more. I have one with a cross on it and others with the American Flag on them with blue and red lines on them as well. My home office door has three straps with hooks for hats on it. My closet in the bedroom has about a dozen hats that I wear the most. One shelf at work is decorated with hats (stop by them and see). I gave several dozen away to Goodwill recently because I couldn’t wear them all or keep them all (said the boss). A number of my hats belonged to my dad at one time. Continue reading

What Is It That We Treasure?

Luke 12:34

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

112015 Ray McDonaldMy daughter from California called tonight and told me something that brought a tear to my eye. My oldest granddaughter saw someone that looked like me and got all excited that Pop was there! Her mother had to explain that Pop was not there but that she would see him soon. I can’t wait to see her and her sister and her parents soon. My grandchildren have my heart for sure. My eight women – wife – three daughters – and four granddaughters – have my heart. They are my treasure!

What is it we treasure? What is it that we hold dear? Is it something material? It is someone? Is it our own desires? Is it Jesus?  What is it we treasure?

In today’s passage Jesus tells us that what we treasure will have our heart. Luke 12:34 – For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Continue reading

Hidden Treasure

Matthew 13:44

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”

profileChristmas is coming.  I know – I’ve said that before – but – I will keep saying it – probably right up to Christmas!  It is a wonderful time of the year for many of us.

I was asked the other day – during a 45-minute 2.5-mile walk through a forested trail with hills and rocks – what my vision for our church would look like?  In between trying not to twist my ankle and trying not to have a heart attack – I shared that it wasn’t so much what we did but for me it was the heart in which we did it.  I created a saying some 30 years ago that goes like this – Christianity boils down to ________.  For those how know me or have known my ministry – you know how to fill in the blank.  Christianity boils down to attitude and we have expanded that saying to include the condition and position of our heart. What Is It That We/You Treasure?

Matthew 6:20

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

profileWhen I was younger I collected baseball cards.  I have some real old ones – some special players to like Mickey Mantle – Brooks Robinson – Frank Robinson – Jim Palmer – Roger Maris – Reggie Jackson – Don Drysdale – Sandy Koufax – and many others.  The Orioles were my favorite team and I collected as many of their cards as possible.

I treasured my baseball cards and kept them in a box under my bed.  Later I put some in a special box and hid it in my room.  I’m glad I did because my mom was once having a yard sale and my little brother rummaged through things in the basement and found my comic book collection and brought them out to be sold for pennies (I might have been able to retire today had I kept that collection).
