Have We Ever Been Content?

Philippians 4:11

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

img_0063-2Think about this question for a moment. Have we ever been content? Have you ever had enough? Have you ever been satisfied? When is enough – enough? How much do we need? Are we storing up more than we need? Most of us live well beyond our needs – yet it is our wants that keep us from being contented.

Have we ever been content? At times – being content might take away our drive – our desire – to accomplish more. But the contentment that Paul is writing about in today’s passage has to do with things – learning to be content with the things we have or don’t have.

One church I served went to Appalachia each summer. We sent teams to ASP (Appalachia Service Project). We learned just how much we had and how much we take for granted. It really helped us (me) think about things in a different way. We had way more than almost everyone we served – and yet they were happy and often content. Have we ever been content? One Thing I Ask

Psalm 27:4

One thing I ask from the Lord…

Ray 2018If you could ask for one thing of God – what would it be? World peace would be a popular request I believe. Some might ask for wealth – or health – or a loved one to return to life. Some might ask for a life partner or for children. What would you ask for if you could ask for one thing of God?

Let me ask another question. How’s your prayer life? Prayer is how we speak with God. How’s your prayer life?

When we pray – do you do the normal now I lay me down to sleep and thank you for this food along with some short prayers at church? Does that sum up your prayer life? I sure hope not. How do you approach God? How’s your prayer life? Would you like to improve your prayer life? Continue reading

Can the Rich Get Into Heaven?

Luke 18:25

Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

RevRayThink for a moment today of difficult things in your life – cue the Mission Impossible music.  We’ve written recently about loving our enemies – about hatred and love.  Loving our enemies has to rank up there as a tough thing to accomplish.  For some of us getting properly and getting enough exercise seems to be difficult.  For some getting to work on time or to church on time seems difficult.  Getting along with the in-laws or our spouse seems hard for some.

Can you think of a few things that you find difficult?  How about getting good grades?  How about waiting till marriage to be intimate with your fiancé or with your dates?  How about going a day without something you love – you know – fasting from something you have on a regular basis.  What about making ends meet with your income has been reduced or removed?  What about trying to make sense out of this world?
